I've forgotten what to do!

DS2 is 6m in a fortnight (don't know how many weeks ) and I am thinking I should start offering solids soon.
He is currently exc. BF.
With DS1 I did purees for a bit then finger food - I'd like to skip the mush this time other than yoghurts etc so what best to start offering?
Toast fingers maybe or literally whatever I have (or DP, I am currently living on jackets and salads trying to slim!)?
What could he not be offered? Never had DS1 choke at all but I think DS2 seems to still have the tongue reflex thing. Also he can't sit totally unaided yet so is it worth trying solids atm bearing in mind these two factors or better left a week or two?

Basically if you do family food, think about how your DS2 might hold and then put a component in his mouth, so you don't have to cook an additional meal and you can eat together. E.g. sausage casserole, make this from scratch with potatoes and DS2 could have carrots and other veg from it and the potatoes. There's low-salt stock cubes available if you're worried about the basis of sauces. If the sausages have a low salt amount, then you could offer a little too. Initially with my DS1, roasted veg was the best thing to start with, and toast fingers. Just consider what is pretty soft inside (or once chewed) yet easy enough to hold without being mushed in the hand. I'd still wait a few weeks if your DS2 is not sitting up and hasn't lost the tongue reflex.

Wait a week. then dont worry too much about what exactly you feed him. our dcs both had a first meal of roast chicken, roast carrot and roast pots. only concessions we made was that we didn't salt

yep I second the roast idea, is a really great meal for early baby led weaning. use olive oil, rosemary and thyme on the chicken instead of salt. yum! and good luck

great, a roast dinner in a few weeks it is then! I only use olive oil really & never salt in cooking anyway so that's not a worry.
he's not going to waste away thru lack of iron in a few weeks is he? i know he's not but am begining to get quizzed about why he doesn't eat yet!

Lumps of jacket potato and bits of salad are perfect finger food.

A study last year showed that bf babies had good iron stocks at 6 months, and as long as you aren't iron deficient and you don't cut out feeds (but let him drop them when he's eating enough to want to drop a milk feed), he'll continue to absorb a good quantity of iron from your bm

OK, cool. Thanks CMOT.

roasted sweet potato is great, breadsticks, cooked veg, toast fingers are great with loads of spreads, hoummous is brilliant.

chunks of cheese, eggy bread, slices of mango, avocado, banana, halved grapes, endless raisins.

Sugar free cereal is good when they're older as a snack to take out too.

mild curry is also surprisingly good despite being sloppy. but you better all strip and put plastic sheeting everywhere....
