Cereal

My DS, (nearly) eight months, has suddenly gone on a cereal strike. He loves his food and I have only found one thing he doesn't like. But suddenly he seems to be turning his nose up at the cereals for 7+ month old babies. I thought it was that he was tired of that flavor, so tried another, and another, and another. Is it too early to try him on adult cereals? Keeping in mind he has no teeth but does gumming well and surprises me with what he can bite off/"chew".

Thanks!

dd is 8mo and has been having bitesize shredded wheat (nothing but wheat, no sugar etc in them) dunked in milk for a month or so. she loves them. she also has no teeth but just gnaws them into submission. it's fine to try adult cereals, just keep an eye out for added sugar and salt.

Thanks Maranello. Do you use adult milk (the full-fat stuff) or formula/breastmilk?

i use full-fat cows' milk as i can't be bothered to express just for cereal [lazy mother emoticon]. i just soak them in it briefly so they're not quite so rock hard and she can gum them a bit more easily.

ready brek and weetabix are also good to try. You can add fruit puree for different flavours. I used full fat cows milk in cereal from 6 months

Hi Scout, mine did the same thing, and we discovered it was down to teething. In the end I resorted to Ella's brekkie pouches, which he took to very easily, especially by just sticking the end into his mouth and squeezing it in. (We do otherwise use cutlery in our house, by the way.) Another thing I tried was home made rice pudding with Nutella, which worked too.

It was only a phase, but even now we have to rotate the cereals and add in bits and bobs. Otherwise you can try something savoury like scrambled eggs on toast. Eat it yourself and he might like to have a nibble of it.

Be brave!

Thanks all!

I tried covering the cereal/s in fruit, but no joy. Will go and find some adult cereals that might be good and maybe try scrambled eggs tomorrow. (Why did I think eggs weren't to be given before 1 year?)

Undercooked (and raw) eggs shouldn't be given to under 1y olds. Cook them well, with patience you can just about do it without making them rubbery, perhaps add a bit of cream just to make it more palatable for him.

And if he doesn't like it - you can have it!

I add milk to my scrambled eggs and cook them so they're not runny and sometimes they're even a bit brown, iykwim. And sometimes I even add cheese. Will try them all on DS.

I can second the Weetabix and Ready Brek recommendations.

Ds (9mo) loves them with or without fruit and just made with warm full fat milk.

I am also too lazy to express for cereal, I do enough of it at work!
