Is that how you spell it? can anyone help with this, when can you give fromage frais/yoghurts etc? DD is 6 months. Have tried to ask HV but as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

doesn't it say on the packaging? i'm sure most are from 6 months.

mumtosomeone · 13/08/2005 09:47

as long as she is not milk intolerant then go for it!
When did you wean and has she had other milk products or things containing it?

Littlestarsweeper · 13/08/2005 10:30

I did

tassis · 13/08/2005 10:34

6 months is fine. that's when I started.

If you can do natural yog and fruit though that might be a good idea. PF are v sweet and once you start there's no going back.

Before you know it she'll be eating Bob and the tweenies ones and you'll have to hide them at the back of your fridge so your friends don't know (or maybe that's just me...)

flamesparrow · 13/08/2005 10:37

I used the danone ones that are made with something babyfied and had pureed fruit at the bottom...

Littlestarsweeper · 13/08/2005 10:38

Once they get to around 3 years you feed them some of those things you vowed you never would. Problem is that once they start socialising they pick up on other mums bad habits and then it becomes a battle in the eating ground.

No point in these battles as they lead to eating disorders so you feed them want you rather they didnt eat in controlled measures.

Littlestarsweeper · 13/08/2005 10:39

I wouldnt get to hung up on it as it comes to them in the end and you kick yourself for wandering round shops for hours looking for just the right product religiously.

harpsichordcarrier · 13/08/2005 10:48

I used to give her natural yoghurt mixed with pureed cooked dried apricots (if I could be faffed) or mixed with a bit of pureed fruit from one of those "just fruit" jars/pots. Mainly to save money really. but she did love the petit filou ones when we were feeling rich...

Aragon · 13/08/2005 10:51

Petits Filous is fine from 6 months as long as she's not milk intolerant.

Can't believe your HV didn't know this. Shocking.

mumtosomeone · 13/08/2005 11:45

a health visitor should be advising against at 6months as its not a good first food and baby shouldnt be weaned before 6 months!

Littlestarsweeper · 13/08/2005 15:57

Most I know are weaned at 3 months. The latest trend is to make them wait til 6 months. In France my friend was advised to give her babies half fat milk. What do you make of that?

pjsmum · 13/08/2005 17:57

i weaned DD at 4 months she as starving and even the hungrier baby milk didnt help. I know its suppose to be 6 months but it was painful to see her in such a state. Just thought she'd benefit from a bit more variety than veggies. Thanks for the advise on the tweenies yoghurts etc, i'll bear that in mind! My HV is useless i don't know why i bother with her.

Would agree that it's not an ideal first weaning food though. More useful when you've introduced other foods with success.
In theory it's fine at six months but worth trying other foods first.
Have you tried mashed avacado pear. It's nutrient, calorie and "good fat" rich.

diva4mgl · 13/08/2005 22:53

i was thinking to buy and try these next week. my dd is only 4 months and she has one a day, baby rice or mashed potatoes, carrots and different things.
what is the ideal for baby specially younger ones? im 1st time mum so have no idea, i have bought annabel karmel book, which is my bible at the moment

moondog · 13/08/2005 22:59

I just gave/give natural youghurt. Buy huge tubs of it and we all love it.

(BTW diva4mgl,I did post on your bilingual thread!)

spidermama · 13/08/2005 23:07

Not wishing to be the voice of dissent but I would stay off the dairy for at least the first year.

Lots of people are intolerant to it.
I speak as someone with a dairy intolerance. I've just managed to kick life-long asthma and eczema by cutting out dairy. My ds2 (who's 5) has also cut out dairy and been cured of all sorts of little things which had dogged him (excess snot, bad farts, skin issues ... sorry TMI and all that.)

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:08

Yes,you're probably right,spider.

Apologies for disseminating crap advice from our lazy kennel.

spidermama · 13/08/2005 23:10

Matters relating to wheat and dairy are firmly trapped in our web.

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:14

{grin]

Sorry,mean

Must be a ruddy nuisance!

(Are you angry that it took you so long to unearth cause of your health problems?)

spidermama · 13/08/2005 23:15

I'm annoyed it never occured to the gps to look deeper. They could've saved themselves a fortune as I was in and out of hosp. I'm really pleased now though. Keep pinching myself that I no longer need the drugs.

moondog · 13/08/2005 23:27

That's great!

mumtosomeone · 14/08/2005 21:28

I weened my last 2 at 6 months b/f exclusively till then.
first 3 weaned at 4months as that was advised then.
