6 month old loves solids - is she getting enough milk?

My little one is 6 months (26 weeks) and has been experiementing with purees. This has recently increased to the point where she is having breakfast at about 7.30 (porridge or rice), lunch at about midday and tea at about 5pm. She has milk when she wakes (although doesn't seem to take much), I then offer her milk again at mid morning (usually about 10.30am) and mid afternoon (about 2ish). She has always been EBF on demand but doesn't seem to be demanding much during the day and so I feel like I'm trying to feed her when she doesn't really want it as I am worried she isn't getting enough! The only time she tends to demand is about 4.30pm. She then has a feed before bed (approx 6.30pm).

She was recently waking frequently but in past couple of weeks this has improved and she is now waking at approx midnight. I usually feed her then. She usually then has one further feed before her day begins. She is an earlr riser - 6am.

She has never taken a bottle (despite attempts) and I have always found it hard to know whether or not she has had enough.

Not sure anyone will have an answer but just interested to hear other experiences.

Ha-ha! I could have written your post. DS is now 7.5mo but exactly like yours, by the sound of things. He doesn't feed at night though.

You might want to start offering water with meals so she gets used to the idea? Esp as it's hot at the moment

I just keep offering and hope for the best, at this age they often bf pretty quickly so she may be getting more than you think. It's settled down now into a fairly predictable 4 feeds a day.

I posted a similar problem myself a while back and some lovely folk emerged with the same issue so you are definitely not alone - hopefully some of them will be along soon!

Thanks. I think she probably does get more than I think. I have avery fast let down and there have never been any worries about her weight. I do try and offer her water but with her never taking a bottle we have gone straight to cup and that in itself is a mission!

Am using milk on porridge and cereal so that boosts her intake. And she has just sucked thel ife out of a chunk of melon so guess she is getting some hydration that way too!

Nice to know I'm not the only one.

Going to pop to clinic tomorrow just to check her weight since this change in her feeding.

Water is tricky for us too. Good luck at clinic

Are you named after the League of Gentlemen character?

Thanks.

No, just a nickname

I had similar prob with DS.

HV said they need at least 1 pint of milk a day, this includes milk in dairy products.

Yeah, think I had read that somewhere. Just wish my boobs had some form of measuring device built in!!!

I give ds loads of yoghurt/cheese/butter to minimise the deficit

I worry about this too. DD is 6.5 months but weaned early (on consultant's advice) due to being premmie and reflux. Now often only has 4 feeds a day and has recently upped to three being solids. She often only takes 4-9 minutes on breast afterwards. Hv told me not to worry about it - to give dd as much food as she wants and then offer breast and she'll take what she needs.

Thanks for replies. Littl eone still seems to have lost interest in my milk!! has started to eat yoghurt though so that helps and will start introdcuing cheese etc Today she had milk when she woke at 5.30am, some at 10am _ although she really didn't seems that bothered but I persevered! same again at 2pm! then she hasn't demanded all afternoon. We;ve been out and so she has just had some before bed at 7.30pm! She is eating between feeds at approx 7am, 12.30 and 5.

Have been keen to wean off the boob for her daytime feeds anyway so aybe this is my chance. She has never takena bottle but we have been praciticing with a doidy cup and making progress. Is it just as simple as offering her formula at 10 and 2ish instead of boob? what about my milk supply?
