HELP

As per the title I have been attempting to wean DS for a week now. He is 22 weeks old and 18lb 13oz and was 8lb at birth so have more than doubled his birth weight. He was very interested in food and trying to take it and put it in his mouth etc and his appetite was growing.

Anyhoo, i've started weaning him and tried BLW but he has difficulty holding slippery things and seems to find it too much of a hassle whereas if i give him puree he wolfs it down.

What should I do going forward but also if i go down the puree route what things do you guys puree as even though i knew i was going to need to wean him i feel like im back being a brand new mum again with no clue and i dont want to poison him or anything!!!

wait till 26 weeks and then blw

Nothing wrong with purees IMO, but if I were you I would wait a couple of weeks before weaning if you can.
To start, I pureed a lot of carrots & parsnips, butternut squash and a bit of chicken, or lamb, making sure meat especially was very well cooked. Also apples, pears, bananas.

You won't poison him.

Puree single fruits or vegetables first (carrots, apple, pear, banana, sweet potato, butternut squahs are best). Then try combinations of those.

Add a bit of broccoli or spinach.

Then, after 26 weeks, try a bit of yoghurt here and there, grate a bit of cheese in. A slice of toast and butter.

I'd delay meat for as long as possible as the nappies take on a whole new genre

There is a lot of puree vs BLW on here and people seem to get very het up about it but I always went with a combination of both. So spoonfeed purees but also give finger foods (sweet potato wedges, sticks of cooked carrot etc) and toast. Then they get the best of both worlds.

DS1 was fine with this but DS2 never liked being spoon fed so very quickly I was giving him pasta with cheese sauce and broccoli which he ate with his hands.

No salt, no honey and you'll be fine.

Or nuts!
great post fruitstick I wish I had that advice back then

IMoveTheStars · 30/05/2010 22:24

no meat, eggs, wheat, added dairy (other than BM or FM), sugar, salt etc.
Def avoid fish for a while - adds a new level of horror to nappies.

Basically before 6mo, if you choose to wean before then, you need to stick to fruit, veg and baby rice.

Thanks everyone

AdsVitsFoodJuice - i just don't think that he can hold on for another 4 weeks. He's pretty much constantly on the breast only really managing 2 hours between feeds as it is and he has 1 bottle of formula at night and i dont want to increase that if it makes sense?

fruitstick - great advice, thank you and also thank you for reassuring me. So, in my novice weaning state do I need to start off offering him only 1 thing for a few days eg apple then after a few days offer him banana for instance? Also, should i only offer it to him once a day or 3 times a day or after every feed apart from in the night? I'm hoping to do as you do and do a mixture of the 2 options and do BLW and purees which isn't what i wanted to do but I want to do what makes my little man happy

I started just offering some food once a day, after a big morning feed then very slowly built it up, after a week or so increasing to twice a day and so on.

I know what you're saying about him feeding constantly etc. because DS was the same. By 20 weeks he was sitting up, seemed interested in food, had exactly the same weight gain as your DS funny enough and so on the advice of my HV I weaned him. (She also said that he would start sleeping through if I weaned him...that didn't happen til he was 20mo! Grrr.)

Wish I had MN at the time cos I would have waited a bit longer- I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, I'm just saying that at the time I didn't realise that milk was more calorific than the purées/baby rice etc., that weaning is about getting accustomed to flavours etc. rather than filling up their tummies or that a growth spurt around 4-5 months is common anyway so he probably would have unclamped himself from my boob a week or so later.

Anyway, not to put a downer on it, just my experience. It is lovely watching them try new things, especially when you hit on something they really like.

fruitstick · 30/05/2010 22:50

I don't think you have to stick to one thing but try not to introduce new foods all at once. Introduce a new one every 3 days or so, and give him foods he's had before on the other 2.

And I would be led by him in terms of how many meals a day. If he's only 22 weeks he really should be getting most of his calories from his milk and he shouldn't be dropping any. I always started solids as a relatively early lunch (about midday or just before so they'd had their morning feed and wasn't too close to their afternoon feed. I would then wait until he is eating a good amount (2 or 3 tablespoons) before introducing it at another meal

I just thought i'd update you all that the weaning is going well and my DS is still alive and kicking He just has a massive appetite but i've got no idea where he gets that from
