Possibly very stupid question about BLW

I posted on the 'slow weaning' thread and, because of my concerns in getting my 8-mth DD to eat without being traumatised (which she appears to be at times), am considering combining spoon weaning with BLW.

OK, so, if she's just meant to eat what we eat, surely there will be additives that may not be good for her? Someone (on the Mumsnet weaning page) was saying their child was eating a piece of steak in a pub. Now, surely that had salt on it? Or is that OK? I'm not sure how it all works!!

Please advise...

I think the theory is that you cook healthy stuff for yourselves too, ie avoiding adding salt, sugar and processed foods, so that everyone eats the same thing and you don't have to cook twice.

I'm sure people are more likely to let their babies have the occasional processed thing (eg steak in a pub) when they're out and about than as a matter of course at home IYSWIM.

Or that was my understanding, at least.

steak in a pub is hardly processed. if they never eat salt and then have what must amount to two grains of salt in a pub then that is fine. part of the philosophy is about letting them enjoy food and be part of the family meal.

incidentally, i think it was me who said about the steak - it was one of the first things he ate lol. Although he didn't actually eat it - he sucked it to within an inch of its life and then chucked it on the floor. but then all the iron is in the juices so that is all good. and it is important for babies to have iron.

he loved it .

we don't ever have salt at all in anything so imo that is absolutely fine! and we don't really go out for lunch either - it was easter weekend with the grandparents etc.

i'll stop justifying now !

My DS had steak (and chips and salad) in a pub very early on too. It was gummed and chewed until a grey strip of connective tissue was all that was left.

I think a small piece of steak is fine - as is some veggies boiled in salted water if that one meal is part of an otherwise no added salt diet, and you don't eat out every single day. It's all about balance to me.

Equally, I would suck the sauce off barbequed ribs for him, which I know some people shuddered at, but the amount ingested was very small

Ruby, you're right, steak isn't processed!

AngelDog · 29/05/2010 18:49

I think what I was trying to say was what you & CMOTD explained...only I didn't really make it very clear. Sorry for any confusion.

no probs AngelDog!
