Highchairs and BLW

DS is now 5 months so I'm just starting to look at the stuff needed. I'm really keen to give BLW a shot but was wanting advice about highchairs.

Do people find that highchairs with trays attached are best and hence food straight onto the tray, or simply push the chair up to the table and baby can eat off the table- I saw that someone recommended the mat that you can roll up from Jojomamanbebe and that looked to be a good idea.

I know that lots of people recommend the antilop highchair from Ikea and people have mentioned an inflatable cushion for it? I couldn't see it on the website and was wondering if someone could tell me what it's called or a stock number etc. Also can you get a tray to fit it?

My other thought to start with was a bumbo seat +/- tray on the floor.

Any thoughts/hints/tips on the above?

Thanks

Ikea Antilop

Cheap, easy to clean, easy to transport if you need to, you can buy a tray if you want.

If I was starting over, I'd get that rather than the massive M&P one we're lumbered with

If you already have a Bumbo with a tray, just start with that. The Bumbo keeps them in a good position and the tray is easy to detach and wash and the right height.

If you do go for a Antilop (and they are very good), you can use a towel for your DS to sit on and another one behind. But the inflatable thing might be so cheap that it's worth buying one.

DD has a trip trap as well which is very good and will grow with her.

I think this is the mat you were talking about. We had them for DD and found them pretty good. They would catch a bit of food and she couldnt pull it off.

Also, get a large cheap shower curtain for the floor. YOu can shake it out and put it in the washing machine.

Wow, thanks for all the speedy replies. I feel a spot of shopping coming on..............

Well it's DH's fault for going to the pub :0

Okay, so that was meant to be a big grin face. Any idea where the small circle thingy is on a mac?

I need wine.

We have the ikea highchair. Have used it for ds1, dd and now ds2. We take it all to pieces and wash it in the sink every so often.

I put tea towels and a few trays under it and pass the dropped bits back up to ds2.

CarGirl · 20/05/2010 20:18

I wouldn't recommend a bumbo they are not good for babies something to do with the angle it keeps them at.

Antilop is fab, I have a tripp trapp too but I much prefered having a tray when they were young plus you can take the legs off and take it with you!

AngelDog · 21/05/2010 12:29

I'd be interested in knowing why the antilop is so good.

We have a high chair, but it has a dipped section - presumably for holding a cup. I'm planning on BLWing and I can see myself spending half my life cleaning it out.

If I'm going to get another one, I'll need some good reasons to persuade DH with!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 21/05/2010 12:31

Angeldog, the antilop is about £14 so not a huge outlay if you don't like it!

It's sooooo easy to clean which sold it to me - friends who got fancy high chairs soon realised how bad they smelt if not cleaned religiously after every meal.

Antilop all the way for me.

IMoveTheStars · 21/05/2010 13:17

AngelDog - biggest plus is that it's so easy to clean (you can wash it in the sink if you want)

It's really portable - easy to take apart and chuck in the car, it has a relatively small footprint for a highchair, easy to move round the house, good for pushing up to a table without the legs interfering with other dining chairs, and DS loves it

jemjabella · 21/05/2010 14:28

Another vote for the Antilop here!

mistressploppy · 21/05/2010 16:23

Best thing I ever bought. Seriously. And I had bought a big fancy armchair of a highchair before realising the Antilop was the best - used it once (damnit)

I've bought one for both sets of grandparents too! (to put ds in when visiting. Not for the grandparents to sit in )

AngelDog · 21/05/2010 17:55

Right, it's DH persuasion campaign this weekend! I looked at ours and the tray is firmly screwed on to the chair.

At least our existing one only cost £6 from an NCT sale, so I'm not too much out of pocket.

at the grandparents using the highchair!

BertieBotts · 22/05/2010 19:18

I have a slightly different recommendation - I agree the Antilop is fab if you want a standalone highchair, but I used a tommee tippee booster seat (we had the rainforest version but the normal "healthy care" one looks the same) on a normal chair, and that is great. The tray comes off, it's a good size for BLW (DS went in it from about 5 months just to join in mealtimes by being at our level) - and the plus side is that now he is getting bigger it serves as a booster chair to help him reach thetable.

cairnterrier · 25/05/2010 22:07

Thanks again for all the hints and tips.

One further question, how stable is the Antilop? My nephew managed to push his highchair over backwards when he pushed his legs against the edge of the table (!) so am a little twitchy about stability of chairs now!

Mole007 · 26/05/2010 17:56

We went for a booster seat with a detachable table, and having tried high chairs with fixed tables when staying away, I am so so relieved at our choice. Trying to swing dirty table over DS's head was just a nightmare, and trying to clean before we moved him really wasn't working.

It's great now - he sits with his own tray, or we can leave the tray off, and pull him up to the table. Whole thing collapses really easily, and fits on any chair, and it will do him until he can reach the table without needing any booster

Main advantage was not having to find a home for even more baby claggage! And it doesn't take any additional space in the kitchen as it just uses one of the chairs that were already there.

Oh, and so far seems very stable, despite the near 24lb of DS attempting rocking and pushing

raindroprhyme · 26/05/2010 20:14

i have a phil and teds metoo it clips directly on to the table so makes eating a completely social affair. can put it in the sink to wash and it drys super quick.
