cooking with formula?

is it ok to make say, cheese sauce using formula, where you have to bring something to the boil? i see certain ak recipes for sauces say '250ml of your baby's usual milk'. it doesn't do anything 'funny' to it, does it??

not sure - can't you just use cows milk?

camflower · 13/05/2010 16:11

well me and dh loathe full-fat milk so most of it gets wasted when i buy a pint for ds (8m). he's bf but it seems easier to make up a bit of formula when u need it ... like for ready brek, for example (trouble is he has now gone off ready brek!)

you can use it, easier to just use cow's milk though

SilveryMoon · 13/05/2010 16:17

Yes, I used to use it in AK recipes. Just make up the required amount as normal. It's normally about 2oz isn't it?
Use it in milk form, not just the powder, but you can use full fat milk too, the reason she tells you to use the formula is to give the puree a recognised taste

overmydeadbody · 13/05/2010 16:19

just use whatever milk you have in the house, it doesn't have to be full fat.

camflower · 13/05/2010 17:36

i thought it had to be full-fat for babies under 1?

Its fine for porridge and stuff but will make your cheese sauce smell really really weird and rank as I discovered when making cauli cheese the other day and had run out of normal milk. DS didn't seem fussed but normal milk is much nicer.

thisisyesterday · 13/05/2010 18:17

no, you don;t need to use full fat

once they're having cow's milk as a main drink i would use full-fat but wouldn't bother if it's just to make up cheese sauces or in porridge or whatever

BertieBotts · 13/05/2010 18:19

You should use full fat but 2oz in a sauce is really not going to make much difference if it's full fat or not

Alternatively buy a pint of full fat milk, measure into 1oz portions in an ice cube tray, freeze and defrost as needed in the microwave.

camflower · 13/05/2010 19:32

ah that's a cunning idea bertiebotts (although swift defrosting hindered by lack of microwave!)

Ok, if no microwave, buy some of those breastmilk storage bags and freeze 1oz of either full fat milk or breastmilk in each, then defrost in hot water.

beccas · 13/05/2010 19:41

crumbs too clever by far. Can you be on hand at all times please Bertie Botts? excellent advice!

camflower · 13/05/2010 19:48

top tip bb thanks - off to do that now

Has anyone tried using your baby formula instead of your usual normal cows milk in a cheese sauce? I've just tried it. Because I was making it for my 9 month old son that has an allergic reaction if he has too much protein in his food or milk and I gotta say... you can really taste the formula in this one in comparison to how we would usually make it. 😅

RappersNeedChapstick · 09/08/2024 06:56

What kind of allergic reaction is your LO having @MamaBear11123?

@RappersNeedChapstick
He gets rashes on his face, it gets really irritating for him and itchy. Almost like eczema. He does get very wheezy on top of it too. It's been confirmed by the doctor that he has an allergy to cows milk or too much protein. So I've been told to reduce the scoops to the amount of water he has in his bottles. 1 and a half a scoop per 100MLS not sure how much that is in ounces sorry

Is that with normal formula? Are you in the UK?

Your baby seems to be showing the signs of IGE CMPA.

Hace they prescribed a formula suitable for babies with CMPA and referred you to a Paediatric Dietician?

@RappersNeedChapstick yes he does have a cows milk allergy, but the doctor just told me to reduce the amount of scoops he has in his bottle (basically dilute his drink) since there's no formula here in New Zealand that has reduced protein in it. I have to get a referral from our GP to see a pediatrician. Other than that, they are fully booked out. So far, he hasn't had any allergic reactions since I've diluted his bottles. But I do have prescribed moisturizers incase his skin flares up again.
