11 month old was perfect eater but now refusing everything !

My 11 month old DS was the perfect eater....he always had a big appetite and ate just about anything I gave him (he even had pureed brussel sprouts at christmas).

In the last few weeks he has really started to mess me around, just as ive dropped his afternoon bottle. I

t started with an aversion to finger foods...he started playing with bits of toast, rice cakes etc instead of eating them (NB Ive always spoon fed and just given finger food on the side and as snacks rather than BLW).

Now he has started to refuse his lunch inclusing things like veg in cheese sauce, mashed potatoe, beef stew etc that he has always loved. Yesterday he even refused his weetabix in the morning. Yet each day he has done this he has managed to finish off his tea without any protests.

I know I have been very lucky up til now and that this could just be a phase. At home im trying to stay calm and just offer him something else.....the thing is he has just started doing the trial sessions at nursery and so far has refused to eat anything other than fromage frais on the 2 half days he has been there.

Im getting concerned that he will develop a sweet tooth (with all the yoghurt) and that he is getting less food just when he needs it the most (he is very active). Added to that we have massive sleep issues.

Am i panicking too much or should I try something else

Have you thought about teething? DD went through similar face before her first bottom teeth appeared and I was very worried. It stopped on its own. What I did with her was stop offering food if she didn't wanted, of course I was breastfeeding her so it didn't worried me if she didn't want to eat.

TBH I still don't worry if she doesn't want to eat as much as she usually does as I think it must be a reason for it even if se cannot tell me and I cannot understand. Maybe you just need to relax and see what your son is trying to tell you. If his weight is ok I wouldn't worry if he doesn't eat big quantities. Sometimes they only need little bits to have enough.

HTH

I bet it IS teething

I would also try to stop being too anxious (easier said than done, I know). Food is a very emotive issue, I think it is important to be relaxed around it.

My 11 month old is doing this we are doing BLW and she would eat most things but now she refuses everything except raisins ,water and breastmilk.

She has had a bug this week but the refusing food has been going on for a couple of weeks I am thinking teething too.

well there iws definatley a tooth coming through at the top....its just that teething has never really caused this before.

I am trying to chill out about it....he is a good weight (has never dropped below the 75 centile) and if he eats badly for 2 meals he usually eats well at the thirs meal. At least he will always eat yoghurt !

There is also a lot going on in his life with starting to walk, going to nursery etc so maybe he is just a bit distracted too.

Thanks for the reassurance

I reckon it could be teething too.

My daughter just went through the EXACT same thing (I could have written your post...) and now I see that her top teeth have just come through. We didn't have any problems with the bottom teeth so I was dismissing teething as a cause. Now she is back eating everything. What it taught me was to trust her to know what she needs to eat.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

well it seems that DS had had pharingitis (apparently like tonsilitis but affecting the whole throat) and is now on antibiotics....feel a bit guilty because he has been struggling with it for over a week and I just thought it was a cold.

no wonder all he wanted to eat was fromage frais

So sorry to hear he is unwell. I am sure he will improve soon and be back to his old self eating all his favourites soon. Don't feel guilty - impossible to know he had a throat infection.
