straining and grunting noises; just started weaning - coincidence?

Hi all,
My baby is now six months old and I have started to wean her in the last week. So far she has been doing really well. She has been having baby porridge, pureed carrot, mashed banana etc - I have been keeping it fairly simple.
However, in the past few days I have noticed she has started making major straining and grunting noises, going red in the face, a bit like when she does a poo but she isn't doing a poo (and she does it for ages)! She also gets quite upset and unsettled. Her poos are regular and not dry at all so I am pretty sure she isn't constipated.

Has anyone else had this at the start of weaning? Is it just her getting used to the sensations of solids in her tummy? Could it be a windy tummy from the food?

I don't think she is in pain as she isn't screaming the house down but she is clearly not her usual self and if there is anything I can do to help relive any discomfort then I want to try.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Claire.

I think she's just getting used to the solids. My ds1 did this when he weaned.

Have you made sure she has enough fluid? Just a thought, but she may be eating more puree than she needs just to get the liquid in it. You could try giving her water to eat and pieces of banana or cooked pieces of carrot to hold - she's 6 months so she can do this herself, instead of being fed puree, and it might mean she separates out the feeling of having solids with the feeling of having liquids iyswim.

I think she is eating too much puree before she realises she is full as she has been a little sick on a few occasions after eating, so I will definitely try giving her finger foods and water tomorrow and see how she does with that.
Thanks
Claire
