Protein

We're doing a mixture of puree and BLW with 6mo ds, he loves everything and eats loads (from a spoon - getting there slowly with the blw!)

We've tried a good mix of veg, porridge etc but I wondered if anyone had ideas of mushable proteins? I believe egg is better left til a bit later due to potential allergies. Meat is hard to chew...pulses??

TIA

We're not doing much blw, apart from pieces of fruit for dessert some days so can only advice about non-blw protein. DD started meat from 7 months. I usually wrap a chicken breast fillet with some butter and slices of tomato in foil and grilled this in the oven for about 15 minutes and it was quite easy to puree or mash this, then freeze it. I usually mix this with a veg puree later. I did also give DD strips of this chicken as finger food and she really enjoyed as it was really soft and not very difficult to chew.

The same with boneless beef and lamb, except that I added more veg to it like sweet potatoes, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, onions etc and baked in the oven for about an hour or so until meat was tender. It doesn't go hard because its all wrapped in foil. Pretty easy to puree when its cooled down, but there will be lumps.

This website is quite useful.

cheese, lentils? well cooked egg is ok from 6 months. You could use them to make pancakes, eggy bread, etc if you didnt want to give 'straight' eggs.

mistressploppy · 28/04/2010 18:34

Ohhh, thanks chaps.

Will definitely try some foiled offerings and eggy bread is a very good idea

mince isn't at all hard to chew, ditto any fish, and egg is fine from 6 months.

mistressploppy · 28/04/2010 18:38

Yes, did fish tonight, went down well. Have tried mince but he spat the bits out! Will try again

If you roll the mince into finger shapes, then cook them, he will learn to deal with them really quickly.

lumpy puree is a HORRIBLE substance for mouthfeel. I'm not surprised he spits the bits out.

I give dd3 (10 mnth)boiled egg mashed with a bit of butter, shephard's pie mashed up - but I do blitz the mi ce to make it smoother as it can be difficult to chew, ditto chicken which I chuck into mashed potatoes wigh some veg. Cheese stirred into hot nash another favourite. Pasta has protein too so I usually blitz what we have.
Mash is great because they can pick it up themselves and lick it off their fingers. Sets like concrete on the floor though.

Pronoia · 28/04/2010 18:59

Peas and baked beans are sources of protein too. Good for pincer grip

mistressploppy · 28/04/2010 19:02

He had some peas and they made him fart like nobody's business

Mince fingers GOOD idea

Chicken thigh (high in iron), cod and salmon blend well within a casserole, as do lentils (although an incomplete source of protein).

I used to simmer the following in a casserole dish and then blend:

Protein (e.g. fish or chicken etc)
2 or 3 veg (e.g. carrot, leek, broccoli)
Carb (e.g. sweet potato)

I would then portion it up and freeze for use when needed.

I found that cheese when melted in puree and then defrosted went too stringy.

You could try cauliflower cheese?

I think scrambled egg was the first thing I gave the DS's! DS2 was chewing on a chicken drumstick from 6.5 months. LOVED it!
Pieces of chicken breast make a great first finger food.

If you want to use lentil, I add it to stews/casseroles/bolognaise.

What about quorn products? Easier to chew if you're worried

addictedtofrazzles · 28/04/2010 19:08

smallorange - not sure that pasta is a protein . It is a good carb, though!

FrazzleRock · 28/04/2010 19:19

Us Frazzles are quite addictive

DS chewed on strips of steak at 6 months, the day before his first tooth came through! If you tenderise it before cooking (just punch the hell out of it on a chopping board before cooking) and also cut it into strips across the grain, then it's easier to chew. They will chew and gum and suck all the juices out of it, and spit out the fibres, which are the hard to digest bit.

mistressploppy · 28/04/2010 19:30

Bertie, yes, tried that too! He loved it. Just wanted to get some more into him, but I'm just being impatient...

Pasta certainly does contain protein. It ain't yhe best source obviously, but it isn't just carb.

That's a good tip about tenderising steak. Will give that a go.
