Why do BLW?

Hi, I have a 3.5 month old EBF DD and am thinking about weaning although it's still a few months away.

My other 2 DDs were weaned on pureed food, but I am open minded about weaning and am interested in BLW and learning more. I understand what you do but am still not sure what the advantages are - help me decide?

I read the BLW book and was very keen, but was nervous so started with purees. After a while I got very bored of cooking, mashing and freezing (and remembering to defrost!) so just switched to proper food.

So the advantages to me:

Very little preparation required.
Don't need to remember to take food out and about - just order a sandwich or anything else in the cafe and let him tuck in!
I can eat my own meal/wash the bottles/tidy up in the kitchen while he eats, instead of constantly hovering over him with a spoon.
It's great fun watching them try food and find ways of picking it up. I love watching him develop from "it's not in my mouth so it doesn't exist" to "Where did that piece of cheese go? Oh there it is on my lap, I'll pick it up and finish it".
As you can see I'm a huge fan! I really suggest you read the book

We did blw with DS1 but DS2 has not taken to it all so we're having to go down the spoon feeding/puree route . It's such a pain - I would much rather do blw!

When all our friends were still spoon feeding, we were just giving DS1 whatever we had and he loved it! Is still a brilliant eater now.

Give it a go, you'll enjoy it - esp with two older children!

Well, it may suit your child - mine are both outt-and-out spoon refuseniks, so it was good to know there was another option. It's good fun, if hideously messy and requires little planning or preparation, so it's good if you're disorganised like me.

cause you dont even have to think, worry, try to get them used to lumps
worry if your over feeding, inderfeeding, getting them used to too sweet things or ending up giving the same boring food

wait till 6 months
chuck whatever your having on their tray and take piccies

voila, bloody amazing
I would never puree wean a kid ever ever again

my first two puree weaned kids, I messed them up, they are scarily fussy, totally messed them up I did

gecko I just pffered whatever I was eating
she will try anything
some of her faves are chilli con carne and tikka masala

shes not keen on bread or sweets

I just love it. So much fun and means you can eat your own meal at the same time as baby. My DD (8 mo) ate a whole pork chop last night. She already knows how to bite off pieces and chew them, with her four teeth (2 big, 2 just emerged). No planning really, no faffing, apart from the mess.
On the other hand, if I were nervous about gagging etc it might have been very different, so confidence helps.

You cook a meal for the family and all sit down together to enjoy it. It's so straightforward and inclusive. I loved it!

Because it's far less hassle than pureeing and spoonfeeding.

Also it allows you to better judge the child's appetite and hunger, rather then making them eat what you think is the right amount which often results in stressed anxious mum and fussy frustrated dc.

sweetkitty · 26/04/2010 09:42

What everyone else has said, no faffing about with making purees and ice cube trays.

Just plonk them in highchair and give them bits of waht everyone else is having.

Look very smug when your 9 month old is eating a cheese sandwich and banana whilst your friends are trying to warm up a pot of mush as their babies won't eat lumps.

It's the way they are going to eat anyway i.e. they won't be on purees at 2 so it's just cutting out a stage.

I just love these photos on the BLW facebook group. My son is on there too!

jemart · 26/04/2010 14:40

I love BLW but then I am rather lazy - can't be bothered with pureeing and all the mess and fuss of spoon feeding.
My main reasons for co-sleeping and BFing are also for my own convenience.....
