No fish before a year?

Here in France I've been advised by two doctors (one a GP and the other an osteopath) not to give fish before a year...supposedly to avoid allergies. This was just general advice, my DS isn't particularly allergic. Neither my DH nor I has food allergies.

Anyone else heard this? Sounds a bit extreme to me and I'm getting bored just giving him chicken and beef...shall I just ignore?

Yes .I'm in the middle of weaning DS at the moment and haven't seen any blanket prohibition on fish at all.

Really? I'm in France and didn't hear anything like that. In fact in dd's carnet de sante there are portion sizes specified for meat and fish.
Ignore.

do they mean shellfish? some people are allergic to crustaceans, but (I thought) rarely to regular fish. DD had it since weaning at about 6mo and loves it - excellent way to get protein in

azazello · 23/04/2010 20:40

Sorry - yes is to ignore the advice.

not heard that. Not even from my Osteopath French BIL when we were out there visiting and I was making a fish pie which my 9 month old happily tucked into at dinner time.

Well, today for lunch I made DS a mixture of salmon, sweetpotato, green beans and milk and he ate it all with great enthusiasm. Will let you know if there are any adverse effects overnight!

Our daughter had fish almost from the word go.

My ds is 8 months and loves cod

If there are no known allergies I would also just go ahead when ready.

DD loved to pick up bits of fish. Really easy to hold, chew and swallow when weaning. As long as it has been thoroughly checked for bones.
