"Invitation to come and learn"

Ive just received a letter in the post from my local Early Years Centre, inviting me to a session on "how to wean your baby"

My DD turned 4 months old on Tuesday.

I understand the well meaning of it. It's a good idea to get tips and recipe ideas.
But dont you think it encourages early weaning? Im not obsessively strict on weaning my DD at exactly 6 months, I weaned DS earlier due to reflux. But she is far from ready.
It's offering free tasting sessions!

All other leaflets are advising to wean at 6 months and then you get this, talk about mixed messages!

Just wondered what other peoples thoughts on it were and whether im overreacting by being a bit

I'd be a bit too.

Maybe the thinking is that they want to get to people before they start weaning?

Tasting sessions wouldn't work then though....

Not sure

Maybe they don't do the sessions very often.

I expect they want to get in early just in case people really don't have a clue what foods to start on.

But if one of the points of the sessions is to explain when to wean your baby it's a bit pointless waiting until 6 months. Better to get people in when the baby is approaching 4 months and they may be starting to think about weaning, then the facts can be explained and they can make an informed decision.

I'd assume (unless it specifically says otherwise) that the tasting sessions are for you to taste the varying offerings. Apart from anything else, the legal liability implications of their offering a range of tastes of a range of things to a whole bunch of babies would be horrendously complicated and I can't imagine any sensible EYC going down that road.

You are probably right ProfLayton. Didnt think of it that way.
It's next week and on a day that I havent got DS so I'll pop by and see what it is like.
Ive re-read the invite and it does say "The latest information on weaning your baby onto solid food"
Must of missed that bit in my sleep dperived state!

I went to the one offered to me (ds is dc3 so was interested in what they'd say!) Basic premise of it was to go over the signs of readiness (sitting up etc.) and to taste jars vs home made
I think the aim was to delay any early weaners and to try and encourage home made food.

It got me out of the house for a few hours!

At ours they specifically stressed NOT weaning until 6 months. And because we're in a Surestart area we got a free hand blender & steamer
