To wean or not to wean?

My ds is 22 weeks old ebf and is showing an interest in eating.

Ds mimics chewing and tries to grab food as I'm eating.
I have recently given him foods experimentally. So far he's thrown/played with it - up until yesterday when for the first time he put a chip into his mouth (which was unexpected) but it wasn't ingested. This morning when I was eating ds seemed to indicate that he wanted some food so I gave him a little bread, which he ate and took more when he was offered. I don't think he actually ingested much of it.

Though ds is now eating, I still don't want to wean him fully as I am allergy prone and ds has eczema.

So what should I do?

My DD2 started to grab at food at around 23 weeks, so I put soft fruit or steamed veggie bits on the table in front of her. she's been getting them in her mouth and gumming them for the past week. As far as I am concerned, if she can handle it by herself she is ready to eat.

I am following NHS advice and avoiding gluten and cow's milk (among other things) until she is 6 mo. I will probably also keep her off cow's milk for a bit longer because I had a serious dairy allergy as a child.

In hindsight bread was not ideal (bangs head against table)
Never mind eh!

He probably didn't manage to eat much anyway!

I'm not sure where newspaper comes on the list of recommended food, but DD2 ate quite a bit this morning...

read this

There is no evidence that weaning early than 6 months affects allergies, but there is evidence that leaving wheat until after 6 months does cause problems.

The AAP in the USA changed it's advice last month back to 4-6 months.

That's very interesting, bruffin.

I had read on a US site that the lowest risk of coeliac disease etc existed when gluten was introduced between 4-6 months, that leaving it longer led to a slightly higher risk and that introducing it before 4 mo was a no-no, but obviously random site = no authority, so it is better to see some proper research.

Just leaves me with the dairy issue! Perhaps I should add that to the webchat questions...

Thank you Bruffin and Haliborange.
My mind has been put at rest.

Ds is now enjoying new flavoursI've decided to introduce new foods slowly and document his food intake.
