Started DD with weaning a little early with puree due to DRs advice to help with reflux.... is it to late to BLW?

Hi all... sorry a little long...

I was very keen to BLW with my DD but she had reflux and problems breast feeding from the start.
We persevered with the BF as much as possible but had to give some bottles and ended up mixed feeding until 5.5 months by which time she would only take a bottle and refused breast.
This was put down to her reflux and possible pain associations with BF that she wasn't getting with the bottle as the bottle was mixed with Gaviscon.
As soon as there was no breast milk in the equation the Gaviscon started giving her terrible constipation and as by this point she was nearing 6 months the doctor advised weaning with puree instead of using Gaviscon. It had more or less done the trick and she has reduced reflux and better nappies!
With every meal I have given her a rice cake or chunk of steamed fruit or veg from the start to see if we can BLW but she just doesn't seem ready yet. She will put a toy or her hands in her mouth but will rarely put food in her mouth.
I am still very keen to use BLW but do you think it is even going to be possible now that she is used to and likes puree and is also no longer breastfed?

thanks for reading my long post!!

hey,
i haven't started weaning yet so probably no help BUT i have a premature baby, with reflux and terrible constipation. We will be weaning DD at 6 months of age, but she will only have the physical ability of a 3.5 month old. We wanted the do BLW but it won't be possible so purees here we come!!!.

If you speak to our parents generation and read the older fashioned weaning books they generally all start with purees and babies being spoon fed, with a gradual progression to fingering the food as it gets lumpier, it then carrot stick etc

I'm sure you'll have no problems. Hope thats supportive, if not very helpful .

Can i ask quickly, did the constipation get worse before better?
What did you do about gaviscon when you first started weaning?

mrswee · 12/04/2010 20:28

Hey

thanks for your support!

re the constipation... it basically was the same all the way through the period that we used Gaviscon in every bottle (as advised by the doctor).
When we started weaning with the puree I dropped the Gaviscon from all the day time bottles but I still use it for the night bottles for now as she is we are still establishing the weaning. She seems to be posseting less during the day than she would have before, had we missed out the Gaviscon from a bottle.

Hi, I'm in a similar situation with a 6mo DS with reflux (mild, and much better in the last week or so), also he was a month prem...

As far as I can figure, you can do BLW type manoeuvres with finger foods along with puree (and with puree - just load the spoon and hand it over). They'll pick it up when they're ready. The whole thing about BLW is that they control what goes in, how much etc

At least, this is what I'm hoping, as ds is also rubbish at getting things in his mouth and I want to start (BL)weaning soon as we are phasing out gaviscon now..

Ok so here is an up date..

I have persevered with offering finger foods at every meal and out of the blue on sunday she snaffled 3 small rice cakes.

Yesterday she moved on to munching on a broccoli floret and destroyed a few roasted sweet potato sticks! A lot of this was all mashed into the highchair tray, but that is to be expected!

We have still given her puree along side the finger foods as she is now used to having a certain amount of food and needs it for the reflux. When she grabs at the spoon I am just letting her feed herself. And the amount of puree she excepted last night was a little less after the finger foods.

She was sick two days in a row after eating yogurt though which is a bit of a worry as it's the only dairy we have tried.. though it is possible that having pudding was just a bit more food than she is used to

Oh, that's good news, I might start soon....

Maybe ditch the yog for a bit and try some other dairy? Toast with lots of butter?

mrswee · 14/04/2010 19:42

Defo ditching the yogurt for now. We tried a little cheese on toast today and so far it seemed ok but she consumed so little of the cheese it's hard to tell! Good idea I will try toast and butter next, thanks!
