How to get toddler to eat breakfast

Ds is 1. He used to eat a whole weetbix or bowl of ready brek. He got a bad d and v bug in feb.
Since he has refused breakfast.

What can I do??? He's not wasting away as he eats well at lunch and dinner but i want him to eat breakfast as it's an important meal.

How does breakfast work in your house?

We used to do 6oz milk. Then breakfast shortly after.

Now I don't know what to do!

offer him brekfast later than normal - he perhaps doesn't feel like it when he's first up. Wait half an hour and then see. Also, if you still offer his milk first, offer him brekkie first followed by milk afterwards.
perhaps instead of weetabix/readybreak, offer fruit/yoghurt/toast? He might think it's not brekkie if he sees different food. He may have just gone off the others.

What about a fruit smoothie? My DTs used to eat weetabix and fruit puree, then at about 18 months started to refuse. Since then, I've been whizzing up (for example) a banana, half a pot of peaches in juice, and some raspberries (I buy frozen, then defrost what I need - much cheaper) in the blender, then pushing it through a sieve to get rid of the raspberry seeds, before putting in a spoonful of yogurt and some fruit juice. They drink it up very happily, usually with a straw (started as a tactic, now a habit!) and I'm happy that they've had fruit and yogurt. They're 3.10 now, and will have that plus cereal (usually) now.

We've tried different things. Yoghurt. Fruit purée. Toast. Hot crossed bun.

He doesn't eat breakfast straight after getting up. He's awake before 6.30 usually but we never do breakfast till 7.

We've tried milk during and after food but makes no difference.

Maybe I'll try smoothies tomorrow as he usually likes yog and fruit a lot.

Any other ideas???

Eggy bread?

TaurielTest · 09/04/2010 15:47

Weetabix and Ready Brek are both quite sloppy cereals - I wonder, are you spoon feeding them to him or is he helping himself? My DS (a little older than yours now) went off porridge and now much prefers cereal like cheerios, shreddies, puffed wheat etc that he can pick up piece by piece.
Those smoothies sound nice though, might give thme a try myself...

mrsflux · 09/04/2010 18:34

We tried cheerios and shreddies and rice crispies.

Eggy bread sounds good but may be a stretch on a work day.

My daughter wakes at 7 but isn't really ready for breakfast until 9ish. Just a thought. She is older, at 3, but she's been like this for a while now, at least a year and a half.

Pancakes? The thick American type. You could obviously buy them or you could make a batch and freeze them and just stick them in the toaster.

My DD doesn't very often eat breakfast. The only advice I would give is to say try not to be constrained by what you think is breakfast food, if he fancies a sandwich or something then just give him that.

Eviltwins that sounds yummy, however my DD only drinks shop bought smoothies , she won't even try anything that I've made . I love just frozen raspberries and yoghurt whizzed up.

babyOcho · 10/04/2010 22:39

What do you eat for breakfast?

caughtinafog · 10/04/2010 23:26

what about giving the milk after breakfast ?

My DD like shreddies at that age & oatbix.

seeker · 10/04/2010 23:31

5t's only important if it fits into your body clock's idea of meals!

mrsflux · 11/04/2010 09:19

we've had a little progress.

for the last few days he's had a big handful of shreddies and then some yoghurt/ fruit puree ala evil twins smoothie idea. much better

we've then done milk afterwards.

i eat cereal for breakfast but he doesn't want that which is unusual for him as normally everything from mummy's plate is delicious!

seeker - i'm determined to make sure he eats something before leaving the house for nursery/ school/ whatever. i'm a teacher and can see the effect not eating breakfast has on little people. i don't want ds to get into the habit of not eating breakfast

ds is doing the same at the moment, eating like a sparrow and having me worrying about him wasting away.

i gave up trying to give healthy stuff after throwing tons of it in the bin so now he is on scrummy sugary cerial like crunchynut cornflakes, weetos, sugarpuffs etc. it's only one meal of sugary badness a day and at least he is eating it.

he will sometimes have boiled egg and soiliers if i'm eating it.

seeker · 12/04/2010 06:51

But mrsreflux - he's only 1. Presumably he's not going to school/nursery yet? He'll be a different person in 6 months - never mind two years! I would just let it go - he'll come back to breakfast of his own accord, I can practically promise!

mrsflux · 12/04/2010 12:46

He is at nursery part of the week so we do need a proper routine and he can't pick at food once he's there as they have set meal times.
