Reassure me- it *is* fine for a 7mo to eat nothing but breast milk isn't it?

More and more people are saying "So, she's on solids now then!" and "What does she eat?", and I say, nothing actually, she tastes everything and finds it wanting and throws it on the floor, but we're very confident she'll eat when she's ready, and the people look like this all of a sudden and even though I've done this three times before (third child didn't really take to solids until 9 months) I'm feeling a little undermined frankly.

Yes, it's fine. Just tell them "Oh yes, we are enjoying solids, she tries everything!" and leave out the chucking it on the floor part

Spidermama · 02/04/2010 23:57

Yes absolutely fine. My ds, who's now a strapping great ten year old, didn't trouble himself to eat any solids until 12 months. The others were round about the 9/10 month mark as I recall.

Valpollicella · 02/04/2010 23:59

Yes absolutely fine! She'll get everything she needs from BM. Anything else she eats is a bonus, but not necessary

Debs75 · 03/04/2010 00:03

Absolutey don't worry. As you say you have done it 3 times before so you know she isn't doing anything strange. I assume you are BLW? We did this with dc3 and she was 'trying' everything I put in front of her and then throwing 90% on the floor. At a year she was still mainly bf and had only just started to actually eat food

duchesse · 03/04/2010 11:21

Not baby led weaning as such, just what we did for the third child, having learned from the first two that neither of them really wanted gloop spooned into them (and we didn't do it especially early with either of them- 5.5 months with now 16 yo, 6 months with now 15 yo (on HV orders- most stressful 8 weeks of my life, trying to get her to take solids, that was). It was just my observation at the time that both started willingly taking food at around 8 months, and we just waited with child 3 until she wanted to start eating, which she did at about 8.5-9 months. She hasn't stopped since!

Thanks for reassuring me, everyone. Maybe I used to be more bloody-minded- I don't remember being bothered what anybody else thought last time. I fact I can't even remember them asking whether she was on solids- maybe they just assumed she was.

Thanks so much. DD is 7.5 months (PFB) and I was getting really worried as she doesn't eat much at all (is still entirely BF). We started BLW and she likes to suck things but under pressure from relatives, I also added jars and fromage frais that I fed from a spoon (if I give her the spoon, there's carnage!). She still doesn't swallow the puree from the jar and just gags on it.

However, I'm just going to relax, switch back to BLW and risk giving her the spoon for the fruity jars and fromage frais (which she does like). I guess she's just not ready yet but boy the pressure to have her on 3 meals a day is immense

ChocolateMoose · 16/04/2010 19:31

Feeling exactly the same! (DS is 7.5 months and living off breastmilk, the occasional bottle of formula, and nibbles of solid food). And being told that if he was on 3 meals, he'd be sleeping through the night.

Ooh Duchesse, it's been ages!!
Slightly mad for me the first timer to be telling you that it is fine that your dd doesn't eat all that much at the moment - let people look as as they want - food should be all about exploring and learning and having fun at this stage.
We're BLW which is brilliant fun, and loads went on the floor but dd started to 'get it' recently and now everything we put in front of her gets devoured. I always told anyone who asked all the things she had tried - bypassing any comments of how much she actually swallows.
Enjoy

Now nearly 8 months and still saying pouah! to everything. Also she is now feeding every two hours around the clock. She is just fine and dandy but I am at death's door with exhaustion. Am thinking it would nice to get just one full night's sleep- haven't had one since mid December (she started off so well, sob sob). At my age I need my beauty sleep...
