Confused as to how much DD (12mo) should be eating and dropping milk feeds

Hi everyone - sorry if this has been done before - but DD turned 12mo last week and I'm thinking it's time to start dropping milk feeds and make sure she is eating enough during the day - DH thinks I'm probably not getting enough of the right vitamins and iron in to her (5 fruit and veg portions a day etc...)

Her diet goes like this:

Breakfast:
6oz formula
Porridge
Half a banana
Sometimes a small yoghurt OR half a piece of toast as well

Mid morning
3oz formula to get off to nap

Lunch:
Half a jar of stage 4 baby food
Handful of cheese and tomato pasta
Blueberry and strawberry Fruit pot (or similar)

Mid afternoon
Bit of bread and houmous OR half a banana OR biscuit snack
3oz formula to get off for nap

Dinner:
Small to medium portion of shepherds pie with 2 or 3 batons of carrots OR broccoli (or another veg - basically a mini meal of what we ate the night before).
Yoghurt

Night time
6oz formula before bedtime

So - the questions I have are:

  1. is she getting enough nutrients through that diet (sometimes she eats LOADS and other times she'll just eat breakfast and the jar stuff at lunch and leave the carrots / broccoli type food)

  2. can I drop all the formula feeds apart from the one before bed onto whole milk from a cup, and it doesn't really matter if she takes them or not? She drinks water from a sippy cup throughout the day, but has so far (after a week of trying) turned her nose up at cow's milk from a cup.. so she's really only now getting the 6oz of formula from her night time bottle..... am I trying to drop too many feeds in one go? Or should a 1 year old really only be on one milk feed a day by now with the rest of their calcium and nutrients coming from the rest of their solid foods?

Sorry if that's a bit rambling!? Just confused as to how much milk she should be getting and when to make the switch...

Thanks if you've got this far!

It looks like she's eating loads for 12 months. If she's content, I wouldn't change it yet. A 12 month old baby should be on at least two milk feeds a day but my children always had more then that.

  1. the food looks fine - the 5 a day thing is aimed at children over 5 but no harm in offering a variety of fruit/veg from the start.
  2. I would probably start switching the formula feeds to cows milk one at a time. I would offer 1 feed from a cup (I did the mid-morning one first) along with a snack and let your lo to feed it to herself. I wouldnt switch the other feeds to a cup until she was taking more than a few sips from it.

The minimum recommended after 1 year is around 350mls (approx 12 oz) although it doesnt all have to be in drnk form as they can get the same nutrients from other sources.

DS had milk in the morning and at bedtime from 10 1/2 months until he was around the age of 2 but it was from a cup rather than the bottle.

Thanks guys - am reassured. Am going to follow your advice Seona re milk - hopefully it won't affect her naps and sleep too much!

DS2 (11mo) is breastfed but otherwise eats a similar amount and a similar diet. Tbh it sounds fine to me, but then DS1 was (still is a bit) a terrible eater so DS2 seems brilliant by comparison!

DS2 has his daytime BFs after his morning and lunchtime naps, he seems to be in the process of dropping his morning nap so I will drop the morning BF when the nap goes. I will keep the other feeds as long as he wants them, I suppose. DS1 never drank cows' milk at all until he was two so I wouldn't fret too much about the volume of milk as long as she has plenty of dairy elsewhere in her diet.
