Hi there
I suppose I am just looking for reassurance, or others who have had similar experiences, as I am getting in a rather worried panic here. I would really appreciate any help.

My DS, ten months, was born prem and IUGR, only 1.9kg at birth. Mixed fed from three months as was not gaining on breast alone, but still now having mixture of breast and formula (special high cal formula Infatrini). We started solids at six months. He has always grown more or less along the third centile line but is now starting to fall off it and not gain well at all. He is a quite poor eater and it is often a struggle to get food (and even milk) into him. But: he looks very healthy although tiny, he is very active (never sits still!) and developing normally (crawling and pulling to stand). Starting to teeth now, has two teeth just in the last week. Wees and poos all happen very regularly and he is happy and active. We put extra cream and butter into all his food, make him lots of fresh food and try everything to get him to eat!

He is just SO small (still only 7.3kg now) and it is so difficult to get him to eat, I am feeling worried about him now....

Has anyone alse got a small baby like that, or has anyone got any further advice?

Bery much appreciated...

Hi there,

I'm surprised that you think your DS is really small. My DD was full-term and was 3.4kg at birth, but she is only 7.5kg now at nearly 10 months! We saw the paed at the hospital last week (something completely unrelated to weight!) and he didn't bat an eyelid about her weight.

So it sounds like your DS is absolutely fine! He will be burning quite a lot of calories if he's now crawling. My DD is sitting but not crawling yet.

Please don't worry. Maybe your LO is just going to be small, like my DD. You are doing everything that you can and that's all that matters!

My DD was also prem - although rather more prem I guess, as she was 880g at birth! She's now 11 months and 1 week, and only 6.5kg. Her paed consultant has signed her off though.

She's always active (legs and arms always on the move), although not yet crawling or pulling to stand - she rolls and sits but that's about it.

She is mix fed, but no infatrini here, just normal formula. She loves solid food and eats like a pig! However, she's not utting on huge amounts of weight as she is always fighting off one virus or another. Since November she's had a few days without illness.

As long as they are healthy and happy I don't think the weight itself is too much of an issue.

He sounds big to me!

My dd was IUGR, 1.75kg at birth and only around 6.3kg now at 15 months.

Developmentally she's great- crawled at 5 months, walked at 11 months. Like Galena though, she's just had a bad winter where she's had one thing after another.

I exclusively breastfed and wasn't offered anything like Nutraprem, though I do think she would've benefited from it.

It may be the infatrini...big disclaimer I am not a doctor so don't do anything based on my experience...

My twins are 16 months on Friday and weigh 7.5kg. They were 6 weeks prem.
They were put on Infatrini last Nov and whilst they never the best eaters in the world, it got worse when they were put on it.
In didn't actually increase their weight gain and gave them bad constipation.
We then had to do dairy free for 2 weeks to try and improve the poo...didn't work. Have just been put back on the infatrini by the dietician and hey presto, we have stopped eating again...

Sorry waffled on then

His weight gain is always to going slow down cos he is more active and I think with smaller babies it is so pronounced when we pore over the red book and check the lines!
What has your health visitor said?
Has he dropped down 2 lines?

maybe he is supposed to be small???

someone has to be on the lower end of the chart, and if he is hovering around the same place that's absolutely fine

there are lots of reasons why he might fall off it a little bit- moving round more, illness etc

if he is happy and healthy and meeting all his milestones i really wouldn't worry at all

My dd2 was full term and 3.6kg at birth but only 7.3kg at 10 months. She was also crawlling and pulling up at this age. The health visitor don't seem worried and I just think she is going to be quite small.I'm 5"2' and quite small build so not supprising really. Weight gain rarely follows the curves exactly.

Thanks for all the reassuring messages, I do worry about him but keep telling myself that he is really very healthy! He sometimes eats well and then has an off day when it is a struggle to get anything at all into him! It is good to hear from other little ones who are fine and developing well.

That is interesting about the infatrini, I must say though that DS is not constipated on it, we get about three poos a day here! DS is so very active and constntly moving as well.

I feel better now, some babies are just small people I suppose!
