DS nearly 1 - weaning is not going well.

Hi all!

Our DS is going to be 1 on 7th April.

Weaning is being interesting to say the least.

We have tried him on most fruit (he hates banana's with a passion). I have spent ages blending vegs (as he wont eat them as chunks) and he still doesn't like them.

He occsionally likes bread / toast and the same with cheeses and yoghurts.

BLW and finger foods is not the way for this baby as he just literally either plays with it (it's not a bloomin' toy!) or chucks it over the edge - nothing goes down his gullet!

ATM he consists on half a jar a day of HIPP O creamy rice breakfast or creamy porridge (from the jars, as he doesn't like the stuff I make up) (oooh anyone know where I can get creamy rice pudding in powder form as having troubles locating and that is one thing I haven't tried??)

He also can only tolorate the cow and gate chicken squash and pasta bake and the orchard chicken (half a jar a day for dinner).

Bearing in mind this is all stage one jars and he wont take next stage up jars. Whatever I cook him or prepare for him freshly - he doesn't like.

He is FF. He is still gaining weight, and a fairly contented baby in that respect.

We have been trying things since 6m and still to no avail Also my other complaint is that he doesn't like drink any other type of fluids aside of his formula. I would love him to be able to drink water, as I love it, but he is just not having it. Should I try issuing water how I issue his formula, by using the same style bottle and teat, because we have tried numerous cups and spouts etc and he is just not having it!!

dont get me wrong I love him to pieces but this is getting tiresome as he is just not responding well to anything we try

what are we suppose to do after he has turned one, and nothing is changed, do we keep on with his first stage milk, do we change it to cows milk, if so how do we do this?? I am getting more and more anxcious the closer it gets to his first birthday (not that I show him that, its all sweetness and light when he doesn't except)

All advice and tips please do give - and if anyone else is going through this, please talk as it may make me feel like we are not the only ones!!

Thanks in advance.

Hi, haven't read the replies you have had already but might I suggest allergy testing?

Children who are slow to try foods can be doing this instinctively because they fear "poisoning" them selves.

A point about the emotions around meal times and the desperation for him to eat. I would say that you should take the hard line approach. (once allergy tested)

Put the food in front of him blw style and wait for him to try things. He can keep going on milk and one day he'll start eating more foods.

Patience! He knows your frustrated by the whole thing. If you can relax he should too and that might give him the confidence to try some different foods.

It will all turn out fine.

Hi peeps!

Just got a quick chance to sit down, before LO wakes up I am sure!

Summer Lightning - hope the selling of the house goes smoothly for you (regardless of how much baby food gets thrown around )

You have all been wonderful with the support, and don't you think its lovely to know that we are alll in a similar boat!?!

Bumbums - thanks for the post - the allergy would be a good idea, if this continues on for too long, the reason why I suggest doing at a later point, is, because you haven't a chance to read through the masses of posts you might not have noticed me saying that DS trys most things, it's a case of whether he then continues to try them and like them! But I will bear that in mind for future if it is still tough going, thanks. Also, I have managed to get the sweetness and light heartedness at mealtimes down to a T, because before when I was getting frustrated, he picked up on that straight away! Learnt my lesson there, so I am pretty relaxed when it comes to meal times!

Katechristie - what a wonderful idea of putting in your own cubes with the jars, why do I never think of this sort of stuff!!??!!

I will defo give that a try because I have been slaving over veg's and blenders and such, and it seemed like they would go to waste, not now!!

Oh yeah, about the bacon, peeps you are totally right how much can one baby eat (especially ours! aha aha!) so I should try and give a small amount of that a go, and now the suggestion of carbonara has cropped up, (yummy I love it!) I might try it with that!

Yeah our DS weighed 7lb 14oz when born so not a small baby, and he has always loved his milk (even if in small portions, lots of times!) so I just figured weaning would be ok, no chance!!

So yesterday at lunch, he had some bread bites with butter on, some cheese cubes, some raisins, a small T.Val from frais and half a rusk - well I say had, but this was provided for him, did he eat much of it, did he heck! we tried the he can feed himself approach and pretty much all the cheese and bread ended up on the floor - even though he had got the hang of bringing it to his mouth, so the only bits of bread and cheese he had were the ones I fed him afterwards, probably two mouthfuls of each, with a screwed up face too! The raisins, well he tried half a raisin, was chewing it, and I thought blimey thats great! 2 minutes later he got fed up of chewing it and spat it out! its not like he hasn't got any teeth, he has eight very sharp ones!! So I took the lead with his yoghurt, and he polished the whole thing up! The half a rusk I gave him, he took two bites, swallowed and then threw the rest on the floor with disgust!! Lot's of mess, but was upbeat about it

I had provided him lunch in replacement of his normal bottle, he was willing to give things a try but aside of the yoghurt, he wasn't too impressed! Oh, I also tried water - I gave him the beaker, he tried to drink it, but was not getting anything out, so I took the innitiative and got a straw, he took the first sip (took a minute or so to get the hang of it!) and because I said yayh, he clapped his hands and wanted another go so at least he had about 4 sips (with the clapping too!) of water! so that is good!

Oh yeah forgot to write - his nap he has, he goes down about 3-4 hours after he has woken up properly in the morning, so it can range from 10 am to 12pm. I have tried doing the early lunch with him, but he gets really upset, because he starts getting really tired, and I don't want him to shy away from food because of him getting upset. So what I decided to do is when he goes down for a nap, the next time he wakes up (between about 1 to 3 hours later)I would have normaly given him a bottle, but now, I set him up for lunch (trialling the last couple of days!). Unfortunately our DS doesn't have an structured time that he likes to wake up in the morning (and it depends if he has woken in the night before, as that is hit and miss too), but I like the idea of that - so maybe he will adjust down the line... for now I will keep it to the other side of his nap time!

How has everyone elses feeding been going these last couple of days??

This is a big post now, so I will sign off, but if I have missed anything out, I will probably reply later!

Any pther posters, please feel free!

Ali - that sounds as if things are going really well actually Brilliant that he had about 4 sips of water - took a few goes before dd would have more than 1 sip. Looks like he responds to your praise as well Have you tried the soft cheese/bread stick combo yet? I can't stand cream cheese on it's own but dd loves it. It's also quite high in cals so good for us all round dd seems to be getting on better the past day or so. She hasn't got any teeth yet but is now managing to bite off bits of buttered toast and swallow. Only problem is that if I give her toast and porridge, she rejects the porridge. She wants to hold the spoon all the time now and cries when she drops it, so I let her have her own one to hold. It's a bit tricky as I have to try and get a spoonful in when she hasn't got her own spoon in her mouth Mess? Hell yeah. 2nd change of clothes already today. Just gotta not sweat it.

AbiBub · 31/03/2010 23:22

Hi Ladylush

Glad your DD seems to be getting on better these past few days

Yeah, our LO did do better yesterday, I was really pleased about the water thing I am loving that he is responding that way to our praise (the clapping is a new thing within the last couple of weeks, but he seems to like to use it alot now, which is soooo sweet!)

I tried soft cheese a couple of weeks ago, and he was ok with it but not keen, but I have just bought some more soft cheese today actually, although I have just checked our breadsticks that we had and they have gone really soft (who knew!) so thats another trip to the shop! I also bought humous to try with that too.

The buttered toast is a good thing, as it is really nice, quick and easy so thats fab the your LO is liking that! I can whole heartily understand your concern with the toast porridge senario though. Once I know our DS like something I am worried to try something else within the same sitting just in case he gets fed up with trying to eat the bit that he normally would eat, its a mum's life huh!

Do you know what, I tried the two spoon thing and can totally relate to that, we tried that with ours and he did exactly the same thing, and in the end, I think that wound me up more than him not trying anything, so now I just say "mummy do it" when he goes to grab the spoon, he will try and grab it a few times more, but I repeat myself and then he soon gets fed up with him getting no-where (because all he wants to do is play with it, he doesn't even feed himself!!), so then he gives in (now I have said that its going to change isn't it!!)

Do keep me updated on how it is going, I am loving this contact

Our DS tried spag in the sauce today 4 spoonfuls, he was ok with it, had 4 little bites of buttered toast not to enthused about that, he tried a raisin and hated it, but the thing I was really chuffed with was the yoghurt he had, T.Val from frais again but apricot, and he ate the whole tub again I am soooo glad he likes yoghurt now! (now I have said that....!)

a bit later, my mum, said that she would sit with him whilst I nipped down the shop, he was due a bottle, and so she fed him. just towards the end, he threw up everywhere, but my mum said she thinks it might have been the spag, as that was the only other thing that came back up again! poor little mite. The spag had been in the fridge overnight as leftovers from our dinner, it smelt fine when I cooked, it, but perhaps it didn't settle to well so although it seemed productive at first, the spag didn't last! We ended up passing on solid dinner for him, because just in case his tummy hadn't completely settled. New day tomorrow though!!

Any more posters, please feel free also!

Maybe let him play with the food - it's part of learning to eat dd puts her hand in her mouth to feel the food and squidges it in her hands which is a bit gross but I let her do it. She's been doing that for weeks but some of it must be going in as she's gained 5oz in 5 days which I'm very happy with, given that a few weeks ago she was actually losing weight. Today she even ate some of my homemade fish pie It's these little achievements I focus on

AbiBub · 09/04/2010 00:46

Hi Lady lush - been sooooo busy, so sorry for the late reply!

Thats great that you LO has had some of the homemade stuff talking of which our LO had some home made cauliflour cheese this evening, which was great - he had about 15 mouthfuls, horrah!

He hasn't been doing to well lately as he has had a bad cold, so has only really wanted milk. We both managed to pick up a bad cold (typical!) at mother and baby group. Just as we were atrting to make progress with the weaning too!

How is your LO going with it all now?

Our little man, is one now! scary stuff! The down side to me being me, is that without him realising I watch him like a hawk, and unfortunately, I know for definate, nothing that I give him to feed him self actually goes down the gullet!! But it's ok, I don't mind feeding him myself, at least then I can monitor it too Also It will all come in time that he will want to feed himself rather than play with it, it's part and parcel of being a mummi I guess!

Hope all is well - again if anyoe else would like to let me know how their LO's are getting on - please feel free to post!

Hi Alibub
15 mouthfuls of homemade food is great. Well done Yes, I think you are right - he will feed himself when he is ready. I have heard it said that baby boys can be a bit lazy - don't know how scientific that is though (before I get flamed)! Certainly my ds was - it was a while before he showed any interest in feeding himself. And when he was weaned from bm on to formula, he refused to hold the bottle - why bother when mummy and daddy can hold it for you Equally, it is easier for your ds to have milk than food - so maybe he is choosing the easier option. You just have to be tough as far as that goes I guess. dd is doing well. Appetite seems to have increased which is great - though funnily enough has only put on half an ounce in a week, whereas last week she put on 5oz. Weird. She is very active though - despite not crawling she moves about a lot when being held or sitting in her playnest.
Hope your ds gets over his cold soon (and you). I've got a stinking cold as well but dd seems to have escaped it so far.

SummerLightning · 14/04/2010 12:41

Hi, just coming on to update you with my fussy little man's progress.

he is now 15.5 months and things are good. He will now try most things and is adding foods to his repertoire all the time (houmous is the most recent addition that he will actually feed himself on bread/toast). AND he seems to be going off the horrid HIPP organic jars, he will still eat them pretty enthusaistically but they are not met with the same joyful abandon they once were.

So take heart!!! I think some babies just need time to get into it.

ladylush my DS was the same with the bottle, lazy bones my mum used to call him, he will hold it himself now though.

ladylush · 03/05/2010 22:42

summerlightning - glad things are going well
alibub how is your ds doing? dd is getting on great now. She eats lots of homemade food now and her capacity has increased a lot. She has also started accepting formula recently (refused for months) so very happy here

katechristie · 04/05/2010 21:17

Just came across this again, so glad to see these last two updates! yay SL - there is hope DD will wean herself off the Hipp jars then shall be glad to see the back of them. - well here, I'm now back at work and DD is eating nursery mushed home-cooked food really well , so am really pleased as am hoping it'll rub off at home too. IThey tend to give 2 hot dinners to the babies, and it's the same dinner twice, so I've told them to give DD the snack tea that the toddlers and younger children have, - she's not really eating sandwiches yet, but I figure she can throw theirs on the floor rather than mine whilst she's getting used to eating them.

Plus she had a cup of cows milk off them today no problem, despite refusing it mostly at home - clever girl, she figures why drink that when she can tug at my top - she knows where they are now!!! so altho' I still despair some days, I do think we're turning a corner here too.

ladylush · 05/05/2010 10:48

Good progress katechristie Progress is progress

AbiBub · 11/05/2010 15:08

Hi Ladee's!!

My gosh, I thought everything had gone quiet on this post, and was just checking by pure chance and looky looky, things are going with some progress for you guys, thats wonderful news!

Well, My boy loves porridge!!! (not a bad thing I guess)! He now has porridge that I make up (yes it's the HIPP one but certainly cheaper than the jars so horrah!)in the morning.

At Lunch at the moment he has a cube of butternut squash, and a cube of sweet potato, mixed in with two to three spoonfuls of his fav HIPP jars, but the main thing is there is our own veggies in there, after that he has a few glugs of his water (yes I said he has water!) and guess what, he feeds this to himself!! Then he will have a T.value yogurt, and he will eat that all up!

We have tried a number of things for dinner, including homemade chicken and avacado, cauliflour cheese (which he like the first time! not the second) and also other random bits and bobs! No joy on the introduction (and staying put) of a wide range of foods yet, but I don't mind. We give new things a try, and he will try them, bless, but it's just going to take him a while. He will have porridge for dinner for now, which is the main thing. So he is having three meals a day.

He has about 20oz formula a day, although the last few days, he has been having bigger meals and more milk, so I can only assume he is having a growth spurt!! (he tends to have 4 botles a day so whittled those down ok!)

We are getting there slowly, but we are getting there, which is the main thing!

Please do keep this updated with how you are going, it is lovely to hear you have made progress!! My DS is 13months old, he is fairly happy and full of beans (not literally, he won't eat those yet!! ha ha!)

well done, keep up the good work!!
