Yeah yeah, I know it's a phase but what can I do?

I knew it would come. I am currently crashing down from top of my smug weaning tower. DD has gone from eating anything and everything (mostly finger foods plus spoon fed the really messy stuff) to starting to become a fussy little madam!

She will pick bits out of her dinner that she's previously eaten (carrots, salmon, chicken, potatoes, peppers etc.) and throw them ceremoniously on the floor without even tasting them (I am partly impressed with her discrimination skills and partly despairing at the waste)

If I try to spoon feed her anything she pulls a face and turns her head away from the spoon before she's even tasted what's on it. If I can manage to get a tiny bit onto her lips with my finger and she decides she likes it she will then eat most of the food from the spoon with no problems.

I do let her feed herself with the spoon and sometimes she has a good go and others she throws spoon after spoon on the floor.

My main worry is that she doesn't have much milk now -perhaps 2 5oz bottles a day (refuses the rest of the time) so it is important that she gets it in other ways - otherwise I would be more chilled out!

how old?

put a shower curtain or similar on floor and salvage as mush as poss

10 months. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now.

Must admit we are employing the 5 second rule wrt the thrown food (I make sure the kitchen floor is kept very clean ) She's quite insistent that she doesn't want certain things though - carrots being her number one hate!

I am a bit that I am finding myself trying to tempt her with a spoon which is something I said I'd never do.

I can see how people get into problems.

My DD is similar, except she never really got to the stage of wolfing things down. She'll happily throw a jar of hipp mush down her throat but none of my lovingly home cooked stuff - happy to feed it to the cats, but none too interested in food. She's 11months now, so I'm really despairing of her ever eating. Oh, pasta, and oranges she will chew away on happily.
sorry, no solutions whatsoever (I come on here to lurk and find similar posts to make me feel not so alone!) but I hope it improves for you soon! - she's probably at that stage where she's mastered the eating so has moved onto realising she has choices. She will probably start eating pronto when she realises again she doesn't get second courses!

Yes, I suppose it could just be her asserting her wishes! Plus she's getting quite good at aiming and throwing and loves to call the dog over and then throw stuff for him. She even passes things surreptitiously under the tray to him.

Hope you get some joy soon - perhaps you could mix in some of your stuff with the jar and gradually reduce the ratio? They are too clever though these babies!

My DD always started doing this when she was teething. She stopped when her gums stopped hurting and started wolfing it down again.

mrsjuan · 22/03/2010 12:13

Yes I suppose it could be related to teething -she still hasn't got any teeth but I guess they could be on the move.

Just for interest - I have had some success with her lunch today by cutting her vegetables into much smaller, raisin sized pieces. I don't know if it was the novelty of using her pincer grip for them or whether the obligatory BLW chip shapes were getting a bit daunting (or just one of those flukes ). So she's had pepper, tomato and courgette with hummus and pita bread with more going in than on the floor

dd is the same re teething - when they are bothering her it has to go back to spoonfed mush, or she won't eat anything (mind you she is a lazy minx and much prefers being fed to self-feeding). But she's got over it quite quickly each time.

I'm pretty laissez-faire so if it was me I don't think I'd fret...she can get nutrients from lots of places other than carrots.

sounds like her lunch today was good, I will be trying the same trick myself I think!
