rice cakes with or without spread
fingers of roast veg, like sweet potato, butternut squash
steamed veg - carrots and broccoli good
fingers of pear
whole small bananas with a band of skin left on the middle to aid grip (beware both banana and pear stain like the devil)
fingers of cucumber and strips of red pepper
porridge pancakes (thick porridge allowed to set and cut into grippable chunks)

We've started this week too, and that's what we've been having. I didn't think a lot was going down, but the nappies say otherwise.

rubyslippers · 21/03/2010 19:09

mmm - porridge pancakes sounds good

hadn;'t thought of that

thanks

Thanks for this lionstar i might start weaning today. Wish me luck!

SPBInDisguise · 24/03/2010 09:51

nana on toast
gave dd jacket potatoes with some cheese & beans sprinkled on top yesterday, just cut the potato into strips & she gnawed the potato off the skins. It went down very well!

Lionstar · 24/03/2010 10:02

Yay Sabs, weaning can be loads of fun if you don't take it too seriously! Make sure you keep a camera to hand.

Stealth I did miss toast on the list, mmm thickly buttered toast is one of the advantages of weaning (I can't justify the butter otherwise). Nana on toast is yumm too. I didn't have much success with potatos with DD until she was much older, so I haven't tried it with DS yet, should though.

Some other things that we tried with DD:
Slices of apple fried in butter and cinnamon
Veggie nuggets (see BLW website recipes)
Mini savoury muffins
Breadsticks
Slices of peaches, plums & nectarines with the skin on for grip
Fusilli pasta with various sauces (cream cheese & pesto with peas an easy one)
Soup - dip chucks of bread in for them to suck

crikeybadger · 24/03/2010 10:09

Some great ideas...must add these to my list!

Anyone got any thoughts on when to introduce egg?

Lionstar · 24/03/2010 10:19

Hmm egg. I think I gave things containing egg like muffins or pancakes from the start. Egg in its direct form (bolied/scrambled) though I probably waited until about 8 months.

Actually pancakes/drop scones are another fab weaning food. Add spinach and cheese for savoury, fruit for sweet.

One cautionary note be careful with blueberries as I discovered to my cost the other day. Gave DS some smushed up on a rice cake and he came out in hives! I though they'd be OK because I'd seen stage 1 purees on the shelves with blueberries in. I've since Googled and it seems they are not recommended until 8-9 months, so what's that all about?

rubyslippers · 24/03/2010 15:12

thanks very much

why are you in disguise SPB?!

avocado went down very well today

no idea about blueberries ... wouldn't do egg until a year as DS was a bit sensitive to it

same with red fruits

DD doens't seem to like nana - she has had some and literally shuddered when she put it in her mouth

Thought I would let you know I gave my DD baby rice for the first time today and she loved it! She's going to be 6 months next week but she's been waking up at night for a feed, having sleeping through the night since 7 weeks, and also wanting more milk during the day, so I thought I would give it a go. Also took lots of photo's at the same time too!

lionstar I wrote down all the things you said on this thread as part of my shopping list and went and brought some things today, so cant wait to experiment more!

I did have another question - I'm sure there'll be plenty more as the weeks go by! Can I give her breadsticks from now or should I wait?

Thanks again to everyone.

SPBInDisguise · 25/03/2010 06:21

Hi Sabs
Personally I'm avoiding the breadsticks for a couple of months - I'm worried big bits will shatter off in her mouth. Although I imagine by the time it had been gummed so long it would be soggy anyway. Anyway, don't think there's any reason why you can't give breadsticks, but I personally won't be

Shaz10 · 25/03/2010 06:43

My son has eaten bread sticks since 6 months. I find it fascinating that anything he's bitten off that he can't chew gets pushed out of his mouth! And then lands on his chin!

SilveryMoon · 25/03/2010 06:45

I was a bit worried about breadsticks too. I thought that if a bit broke off it would be too sharp for his little mouth, but in the end I struggled to find an easier mobile snack to keep in my bag, they were fine, no problems at all.

I also wanted to add, that at meal times when we were having small veg like peas, I used to mix them in with mashed potato so ds2 could eat them without too much stress - lots of mess though :-)

SPBInDisguise · 25/03/2010 07:10

right, might give them a go!

Lulumaam · 25/03/2010 07:13

chunks of broccoli and cauliflower and pear and apple .. she can hold and gnaw them, all can be steamed or lightly cooked so are not raw,but not soggy eitehr

try frozen banana, it tastes different and will soothe her teething gums

rubyslippers · 25/03/2010 09:53

she had toast finger this morning!

she does what Shaz's DC does - anything she can't swallow she pushes out

steamed pear was good

kitchen floor is a mess

Lulumaam · 25/03/2010 14:20

that is why having a dog is so useful when you do BLW ! the food DD was not bothered with never even hit the floor
