Is early weaning making DD unsettled?

I'm not really sure where else to turn and I'm just looking for a bit of help really.

My DD is 5 and a half months. 5 or 6 weeks ago, I took her to be weighed. She's dropped from 25th centile at birth to 9th at 3 months and now at 2nd. (I think part of it is down to her having an almost constant cold since she was 5 days old) HV was really nice - said nothing to worry about, maybe latch her on more often but DD seems happy enough and recommended I come back in a fortnight. And so I did....but wished I didn't. It was a different HV who said that I need to get DD on 3 meals a day with a pint of milk within the next 4 weeks, starting now. But she was so contradictory in her statements. "She is clearly underweight" and "she's got a bit of chub on her and you're not big yourself, so I wouldn't be worried".

Anyway, on HV's advice, at 5 months I tried DD with baby rice and she happily took it off the spoon. Have gradually introduced pear, carrot etc. The problem is that she has been really unsettled over the last few weeks. I don't know if it started with the introduction of solids. When I breastfeed her she really grunts as if to dirty her nappy but there's nowt.

Is the most likely culprit giving DD solids? How long do I lay off them before starting again? Or do I keep going with them and hope she's just going through a bit of a phase? Mother and mother-in-law are quite anti-breastfeeding so I can't go to them for advice because they'll tell me it's breastfeeding that's causing the problems! I'd really appreciate any advice.

Sorry it's such a long post - bit of a rant mixed with questions.

Don't have v much experience with this, though it's certainly the most obvious change, isn't it? I was just going to suggest you post this in breast and bottlefeeding, as the bf experts hang out there, and may spot your post more easily there.

Is she showing signs of being ready for solids? Sitting unsupported, loss of tongue thrust reflex, pincer grasp etc.

If there is any question at all about her not having enough calories then the first thing to do, especially under 6 months, is to offer more milk. Either more sides per feed or an extra feed.

There are a negligible amount of calories in baby rice and a bit of puree and while they are replacing milk, they are actually decreasing overall calorie intake. The main food source for 12 months is milk.

I don't know if the solids are upsetting her but if I were you I'd stop the solids for now and see if she improves.
