DD is 11months, happy to munch finger foods, which she then spits out, refuses anything I've cooked and mashed up, but will happily wolf down a jar of hipp stage 2. I've tried adding my own veg to it, but can only get away with a small amount, or she refuses to eat it and at this stage I'm just desperate to get anything in her, so now her main diet consists of jars, much to my dismay.

Anybody else reluctantly weaned their baby on jars, and at what stage did they start eating more finger food so you could give up the jars? She's still feeding at night, so I know she's not eating enough in the day to fill her up yet.

She starts nursery in a few weeks, so am hoping that this will help encourage her to eat normal food, with the other babies, but am dreading it at the same time as I have visions of having to pack her off to nursery with jars of food in her bag!!!

DS used to eat jars a few times a week, but happily joined in with our meals too, so I don't know what to do!

any tips most welcome! TIA.

My friend had this problem with my godson. SHe basically went "cold turkey" on the jars and only offered mashed family food. I think he was a little bit younger than your DD. She had a few days of him not eating much and having more milk - I think he had porridge at bedtime as well - but she was very relaxed about and didn't panic about getting food in (he is her 4th child though) it was fairly painless...good luck!

I never used jars - did BLW, and would do foods such as sweet potato and butternut squash, lovely and sweet always went down a treat! Also my son loved small corn on the cobs great when teething too.

Hi Kate
This was just the same as my DS. He has always wanted to do it himself, and me not being brave enough to do BLW alone, crammed a spoonful of jar food in whenever he was chasing a bit of carrot round the high chair tray. We are not there yet though, so I don't have any great advice for you. Thought I would share my experience so you knwo you are not on your own!

The worst thing is being berated by the HV at clinic for giving him a jar. Still I just stopped going to clinic so that sorted that one out!

He is 10 months now, and I have swapped from cooking 'batches' from my baby cook book to just whizzing up a portion of whatever suitable thing we are eating (pasta bake/casseroles etc). This is much better for me because I dont feel like I am wasting time and money making things I end up throwing out. It also means if he doesn't like it its no big deal. I was the hours of cooking and pureeing I hated. He too started sucking and spitting out finger food but I persevered and now he eats just about anything that I give to him in a chunk - its the mashed stuff he doesn't really like now, even jars he turns his nose up to.

I have come to realise that with my DS it doesn't seem to matter how much he eats in the day he won't sleep through the night anyway so as long as he isn't waking up hungry I'm a lot more relaxed about it now.

Hope you get some good advice! Sorry I'm not more help.

At the moment I am using a combination of homemade purees and the Hipp jars/Ellas pouches. The reason being is so DD gets used to both as there are times such as outings, holidays where it will not be practical to offer homemade food. She seems to enjoy both so far.

We had the same issue, wanted to do BLW but introduced some powered mush when out at FIL's house at 7 months and she flippin loved it! The shame It was then onto the HIPP stage 2 jars and they went down really well for about 2 months, but then I noticed that a) she was refusing as much as she was eating and b) it was costing us a fortune.

I decided to go cold turkey on all the baby food stuff and just load up on similar but cheaper regular stuff (checking for salt and sugar content). It took a couple of days but now at 11 months she eats pretty much what we eat, and especially loves cheese omelette, falafels, breadsticks and houmous, cherry tomatoes, veggie risotto and greek yoghurt and bluberries. And so do I, so if she doesn't eat it then I do - so much for loosing the baby weight, sigh...

Just go cold turkey and hang in there for a couple of days, it really makes life much easier in the long run.

Good luck
