blw for baby with eczema?

Hello

I would be very grateful for some advice. My dd turns 6 months next week (time flies!) and I'm hoping to start weaning her. The trouble is she has bad eczema and I'm so scared that starting solids will provoke a worse reaction. Has anyone been through this? How long should I avoid allergenic foods (dairy, wheat, citrus, eggs.. any others?) for?

I was all set to do the puree route, introducing a new food every three days.. but then I came on here and read about the joys of BLW! Would this method be suitable for a baby with eczema? We have a family history of asthma/eczema/hayfever but as far as I know its not diet related.

And finally! How do I convince dh, mil (not that its her business haha) that blw is not deadly?!

Thanks so much in advance.

As a side issue, I forgot to mention my husband is DESPERATE for dd to be weaned. I can understand this, as I have solely breastfed her for 6 months and he really wants to be involved. But it does worry me a little - I can see him being the "come on, one more spoonful" type feeder, whereas I just want to make food relaxed and fun until she is 1. Any advice on this also?

Thanks again.

Okay, my DD is FF, has eczema and is possibly dairy intolerent. The docter has just changed her onto dairy free milk so am also not giving her dairy solids which does make things difficult as cheese on toast, yogurt etc are easy BLW foods.

Can you notice a reaction via your diet with the BM? Maybe post on the allergy topics??

All i will say is when feeding her try to make sure the eczema areas (arms etc) are covered. I think that food getting onto the areas really irritate and put them off eating a little bit.

Also I would definatly keep a food diary. But bear in mind she may consume very little to start with so things that may provoke a reaction may be more noticable further down the line.

On the father MIL thing I normally say this " they learn how much to put in there mouth via there gag reflex. They, in theory, will not push past this. Therefor they will only eat when they know how much they can cope with without choking" Also that there were no purees in caveman days!

Also check out Aitchs blog for scientific reasons why they wont die if u give them a bit of brocoli!

Hi, my DD is 6 and a half months and has eczema, I'm doing a mix of BLW and some spooning feeding ie yoghurt.
So far so good and her eczema does not seem to be any worse or flared up with any specific foods, I was a bit wary to begin with and tried new foods slowly but now we've been doing it a few weeks with no problems I have relaxed much more.
DH has eczema and food allergies, and so far have not given her fish which is DH's main allergy, but I probably will try it at a later date and have some Piriton standing by!As for family concerns re BLW, my experience was that I just got on and did it and that family could see how well it was going and DD enjoying herself, and there have been no major choking incidents, so it hasn't been the big issue I thought it might have been.
Good luck and happy weaning!!

My DS2 has eczema (god only knows whether it's diet related but no family history) and I started BLW really slowly & carefully with a new food every 4 or 5 days but he was so damn fussy after a few weeks of not much going in at all I started to offer a wider selection of foods more quickly and now at 8 months he's pretty much eaten everything except nuts & egg.

He does have some pretty awful flare-ups still and yes they could now be diet related but they are manageble with lotions & potions so I figure we can cope until he's allergy tested at 1.

Oh and BLW does tend to freak some people out (MIL, mother etc) so I would suggest once you're a bit more confident about her ability to eat, swollow, gag etc you get them to sit & watch - from a distance to start with a and show them how it works. I remember my poor DS1 being hoiked out of his highchair by MIL who thought he was choking when he was just exercising his very efficient gag reflex on a bit of plum skin and I'm often having to remind them there's no need to poke around in DS2's mouth to retrieve 'big bits'
Good luck

Thanks loads for your replies! I started BLW last week, very exciting! She's not eaten a huge amount yet but she has had a go at squishing/licking/gumming various foods!

She appeared to have a bad reaction to cheese spread (cow's milk maybe?) as her eczema got much much worse and it looked like she had blisters on her eyelids but I'm trying not to be too precious with her and try her on a range of foods.

Thanks again

My DD has eczema too and has had some flare ups since beginning weaning (BLW). I put vaseline on her face and wrists before she eats and this seems to really help. I think, for her, it's the contact with the skin that's the problem. Also cooked foods (eg pear) don't seem to be as bad as raw. We haven't tried nuts or egg yet (only 7 months, some family history of allergy).
