8 months and still not eating

DS2 is now 8 months and still totally disinterested in food. He totally loves his milk (F/fed) & and have tried cutting back on his bottles but he understandably just gets cross (he does still have 5 x 9oz feeds so no surprise he's not hungry for food )

I BLWd DS1 so very happy with the concept & had hoped to follow the same path of weaning with DS2. However, since starting 2 months ago he doesn't seem to have progressed from the early 'gumming/sucking before chucking it all over the side then getting frustrated' phase. There's a couple of foods he is marginally more interested in namely mango, pear, melon, yogurt & biscuits (!!) but that's pretty much it & anything more substantial or savoury like cheese, meat, various bread products & they'll barely get a lick before being shown the floor. I've even tried purees but after just 2 days of mild enthusiasm he now clamps his mouth shut

So any ideas what (if indeed anything at this stage)?

wait it out
keep offering finger food with no pressure

he will get it eventually

migola · 03/03/2010 08:54

Dd is 7 months old and still not eaten anything. stuff goes in her mouth but she spits it out

DS1 was like this - didn't really start eating much until about ten months. He's nearly four now and perfectly healthy, just has a small appetite.

All children are different - DS2 ate loads from the beginning, same BLW approach, just different child.

Just keep offering with no pressure, and don't make life hard on yourself by offering complicated things - if all he's interested in is fruit and yogurt, then offer those and try him on other stuff occasionally. He'l let you know when he's ready for more.

BTW the list you mention is almost exactly the list DS1 would eat - particularly yogurt!

if you replace one of the bottles of milk with water, he'll have more food appetite - if he gets really upset about the change over, give me some yogurt/custard/fromage frais instead, then the water. Once hes on four milk bottles, he'll probably be more enthusiastic for meals. I put lots of cream cheese in/on everything i give him, including potatoes and toast, so that he gets enough protein at this stage.

Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom & support

Well what a difference a week (& a bit less milk) makes! I decided to try dropping a bottle to see if that sparked a vague interest & it definitely worked. Not only does he seem more interested in eating, he is also much more amenable to trying & eating a far wider variety of foods so now I can add curry, macaroni cheese, cheesy jacket potatoes and sardines to my once meagre meal repertoire for DS2

You 2 girls with 7 months olds, I hope you can take comfort in this - some babies just clearly aren't quite ready for food until a bit later and as everyone says & I've witness, they get it eventually if you relax & stick with in.
Thanks again everyone.

that's encouraging lechatnoir. still no change here
I'm a bit confused about what I can give her now - I've tried fruit & veg plus baby rice/porridge, but normally at this stage you can give yoghurt etc, however because none of what I've given her has actually passed through her system, does it mean I need to wait before trying e.g. dairy?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is lumps aside, does what they can eat at 7 months relate to what their stomach is used to or how much their stomach has developed & can cope with - am I making sense?!

(I know cow's milk is a no-no unless used in cooking)

lechatnoir · 07/03/2010 14:13

Migola I've very much worked on the basis that from 6 months onwards you can pretty much give them anything with a few exceptions (off the top of my head shellfish & nuts are the big no-nos and even then nut products are fine if there's no allergy issues so peanut butter, groundnut oil etc are OK ) cows milk is fine to use on things like cereal just not as a main drink. Oscar has eczema so in theory I should be more careful but TBH he was so fussy with his food I just figured anything goes at this stage and hope it didn't cause a flare-up.

I found with Oscar that is really is just a matter of persevering with different taste & textures before you find something/anything that isn't discarded. I definitely offer yogurt - try plain first then if that doesn't work sweeten with fruit & if that doesn't work try supermarket bought fruit yogurts . Some babies just prefer purees, some prefer finger foods, some like very plain & some like much stronger flavours so don't be afraid to offer something a bit different - pieces of tinned sardine or mackerel (in oil or water not salty brine) are very doft so break down in the mouth easily, jacket potato with lo salt/sugar baked beans, broccoli with grated cheese melted on top, crab paste on crackerbread, chunks of roasted butternut squash or parsnip are all hits in this house.

Keep trying, don't force the issue and it will come.
