BLW and constipation

Hi,

My DS is 11 months old, is BF and BLW. The only liquids he has are water and breast milk. His diet is pretty varied, has fruit, veg, carbs, etc.

For the past month maybe more, every poo has been very difficult for him. He cries, he screams, and after when I am cleaning him, I notice a bit of blood down there.

Is there anything that I should give him/not give him or should I take him to the GP?

The rest of the time he is quite a happy baby, once he didn't poo for 10 days (usually he poos once in 3 or 4 days)
and we called nhs direct but they just said to up his fruit and veg and he pooed the same day.

Thanks for reading!

I tried to get my kids to eat lots of fruit and veg. You can buy some of those fruit puree things (look like yoghurts) with prunes in that should loosen him up!!!
Otherwise, try fruit with stones in it, like plums, peaches etc... my mother swears by this!!
If you think he is really unhappy, take him to gp or ask health visitor for advice!

I had the same problem with dd (not as bad) but every poo was a struggle and it was always really dry and hard. She always had loads of fruit so could not understand it. I think the thing is that with blw they do have less liquid in their food and so i think we have to offer it to them more (either by upping the number of feeds or giving water every hour or so). Seemed to work with dd

My DS turned 7 months now and few weeks back had same problem. I'm also doing BLW. I'm giving him now just prune to eat, maybe one-two a day and he loves them. I just turn it inside out and sort of open it, so he can hold onto it. He sucks/chews the flesh and he spits the skin out (well, sometimes it all goes down). And obviously lots of fruit/veg. He seems to have softer poo now and not in pain. Oh, and orange seems to do the trick too? HTH

remembered my kids were mad for dried apricots, but they had to be rationed due to the "loosening effect"

Another vote for prunes here. Also, this might sound a bit odd but have you tried sitting him on the toilet? DS got quite constipated, but went when he held him over the loo- sitting in that position seemed to help everything move in the right direction.

He now poos at least once a day, on the loo- makes nappy changes much nicer for everyone!

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies!
I am going to try the more water and prunes route.

AnthemaDevice - You r right, this happened the last time he pooed, I had him over the toilet but it was still bad for him, screamed all through. But atleast he managed to do it !
