Is it pointless to attempt BLW with DD who is nit too good at holding things?

or should i try it in the hope it helps her development? She is 25 weeks and i was planning on starting blw in the next few weeks. She can sit for up to an hour by herself and has excellent head control so i am not worried about that but her reaching and grasping skills aren't too hot.

I would just try it - if she can't do it just keep offering until she can. She might surprise you.

Brocolli quite easy for them to hold.

thanks, besom, brocoli is a good idea.i thought melon too if i do a chunky slice. i just don't want her to go hungry if she can't feed herself. have never done traditional weaning so not keen to do purees but will if i have to.

She won't go hungry. They take in only very little solids at first anyway, whether you puree or not. I remember wondering if any was actually going in for a good while after we started.

Have you been on the blw website?

Some people recommend those things designed to crinkle cut chips to make crinkle cut sweet potato or butternut squash for instance. It is supposed to make it easier for them to get a grip on. here

I'd give it a go. Practise makes perfect after all.
I'd keep away from melon for the moment though as can be a bit slippery.
My ds2 liked mash potato so I used to add smaller foods to that like peas and sweetcorn

olivo · 14/02/2010 09:04

thanks, both. i did blw with DD1 3 years ago, but she seemed more developed thsn DD2 is now. never thought about using a crinkle cutter, will check them out.
SM, am hoping DD2 will like potato - DD1 won't touch it in any way, shape or form!

He won't eat it now, so anything that's normally served with mash is replaced with couscous for him and ds1.
I did puree's and spoons when I weaned ds1 and I regret it now. He is such a fussy eater whereas ds2 will eat anything you put infront of him. It probably would have worked out like that anyway, but if I could do it differently with ds1 I would

that's what i wondered, eyethingy. so do i hold off and wait till she's better at gripping? she's good enough to grab toys and stuff them in her mouth but doesnt pick things up and wave them around, as other babies seem to. i suppose there is no point in giving purees anyway, if she is not ready for food full stop.
