How much water should a 10month old have a day?

Hi
My DD is 10mths and is mostly BLW although since an awful stomach bug at christmas which led to hospital admission due to low blood sugar I have sometimes been spoon feeding as she seems to really like it when I do. This was in an effort to get more calories in.

But I'm really worried about her water intake. She currently doesn't take any. I always have a sippy cup at every meal which is in her reach and then I always try to offer it to her too but she never wants it. I also put a sippy cup with water near her when she plays so that she's always got the option of a drink.

I have tried diluted juice in the cup too but still she won't put it to her mouth.

I have bought a raft of cups and a bottle cup thing with handles all are refused. I use the tommy tippee first cups now as those were the ones she was good with to start.

The only fluid she gets is from her bottles which she has about 15-21 oz of formular a day. She was having more but I have recently cut out the mid morning bottle as she sometimes refused it herself and I was starting to get worried about cutting out the bottle's after she's 1.

I know she can use the sippy cup because from about 7-9mths she would drink from it, not much just a few sips at each meal but at least she she was getting something.

I know she needs more fluid because she gets constipated and when she's not constipated she is straining sometimes all day before she finally manages to get a poo out at which point she often cry's which is awful.

I've asked my health visitor and she has said I'm doing all the right things. I'm tempted to reintroduce the mid morning bottle with diluted formular just to get more fluid in.

Something else to mention, she's really teething and has about 3 teeth of which I can see which are breaking through but this has been a problem since she turned 9 months ish.

Advice and experiences would be appreciated. As you can probably tell she is my first baby!!

Hi - firstly, her food contains water, her formula contains water. So she is having some water and the constipation may be down to the formula type, rather than the amount of water she's having.
What does she eat? Does she have a lot of banana that could be blocking her up?

Could you offer water from a bottle, if she's having her formula from one. She might prefer.

If she's crying and in pain when doing a poo, I'd perhaps pop her to the GP - I know she's only 10 months but if it carries on into toddler-dom, it could mean she witholds poos and gets more constipated/faecal compaction.
When she wakes, do you offer water - perhaps if she's half asleep, she might take it?

You're doing fine...up fluids in her food..runny tomato based sauces on pasta for example... Yoghurts, High fibre foods
apples peaches raspberries tangerines oranges pears prunes broccoli brussels sprouts cabbage carrots cauliflower spinach
courgettes. Lots of veg...less cheese.

As for sippy cups...you seem to have an array so have a fun game with them...fill with fresh water and play with them...you take a sip...give Teddy a sip..give Dolly a sip...Give your little girl a sip..see what she likes and what she prefers..do this daily for just a few minutes until it becomes a game she instantly knows and take it from there. Will she take water from a bottle? If so, do that...not a problem. Steer clear of Juices...Water is so much better in the long term and little ones who are used to water have fewer problems with cavaties.

Do you happen to have a doidy cup in your vast array? What really got DD going on water was giving her the doidy cup and letting her tip it everywhere a few times. She might just be an odd child though...

HI, thanks for replies.

She basically eats the meals we do. For instance today we had cerial for breakfast and chopped up pear. She ate all the cerial but left the pear. Lunch was tomatoe and basil homemade soup with a brown torilla wrap with melted cheese inside and yogurt for afters. Tea was a chicken kinda thing with garlic, tomatoe, potatoe and basil and bluberry and yogurt for pud (you guessed it, I had loads of fresh basil to use up before it wernt off hence the basil dishes!). Today I watered down the soup which she took about half of her bowl (child's plastic bowl). She didn't really eat anything today other than what was spoon fed everything else was picked up and thrown on the floor. I also give her prunes, figs and apricots to snack on. She loves dried prunes and eats loads of them.

She hardly ever wakes at night unless she's ill. I never needed to offer her water at night as she dropped all her night feeds including the dream feed at 11pmy 8 months, it got to a point where I was having to put a lot of effort into actually waking her enough to take the bottle so I ditched it.

Stupidly I haven't tried water in a bottle during the day. But I will.

Her Dad did most of the dinner tonight with her because I was trying to get food ready for tomorrow as we've got people coming over and she let him put the sippy cup to her lips and she sucked but then spat out all the watern in her mouth. So that was progress.

I think I will go and see the gp just incase.

I don't have a doidy cup but might try and love the idea of the game.

Thank you I feel like I've got a few tricks to try now!

DD sucked the water into her mouth and then spat it out for about a fortnight before starting to swallow. Now some days she will drink a couple of sips, sometimes a whole sippy cup in one go. Depends what she's been eating and, I assume, how much breastmilk she's had.

Taking water into her mouth is a good first step. It's a bit like BLW I think, DD sucked and chewed a lot before she swallowed. Same with the water: sucked and spat a lot before drinking.
