10 mo veggie BLW baby and protein - anyone have any ideas?

Weaning has generally been going ok so far. DS is now 10 months, and is still BFed a number of times a day/night so I haven't been too worried about his protein intake as he's been getting lots from breast milk. I'd really like to try to reduce the number of times I feed him (he's only dropped one daytime feed so far, so still feeds about 5 times a day/night), so I want to make sure he's getting what he needs from solids.

I'm veggie, so haven't been giving him meat. We also have a family history of having problems with dairy produce, so I've been hoping to hold off on giving DS any dairy until he's about a year old. He'll eat sardines mashed up with avocado, but any other kind of protein goes straight on the floor - he's doesn't seem interested in egg, other fish, or anything made with most beans or pulses. No hummous, no bean dip, no bean stews or casserole, no fishcakes or lovely tortilla. About the only exception are lentils, which I end up giving the poor blighter almost every day.

Can anyone recommend any high protein foods that have gone down well with their LOs?

baked beans, peanut butter (if you have no allergy issues)

protein sources

Tofu? DS was puree weaned so I used to do something with tofu blended into apple puree. Could you do similar? Or just give chunks of tofu?

What about quinoa?

We gave lots of pulses and lentils including beans on wholemeal toast

Veggie mince (there is salt, but all in moderation)

My DD likes the tins of braised tofu you can get in holland & barrett, go well in stirfry

Lots of eggs - not only scrambled, but baked in cakes, savoury muffins, pancakes/drop scones and as french toast (yummy with cinnamon)

We also eat a lot of fish, salmon was always particularly well received

Broccoli is a good source, as are oats and rice - you can grind these and add them to all sorts of recipes or baking

Thanks for all of those ideas. Unfortunately, beans, eggs, and fish (apart from aforementioned sardines and avocado) get chucked over the side of the high chair.

I haven't tried tofu yet, so I'll definitely give that a go. He likes squidgy stuff so that might go down well.

Anyone know if any form of quorn's ok? I should probably get off my bum and go read the ingredients...

Sigur · 15/02/2010 10:52

According to Practical Parenting, quorn's fine but low in calories. Obviously some products more added to than others - I'm thinking chicken pieces are probably purest, but haven't investigated yet. Probably not so good for finger food though?

Hi Sigur
I am veggie too and so are my DDs. I think quorn can be quite salty (but am happy to be proved wrong!) but i gave it to DD1 after she was 1. the ham and the pieces, and now, at 3, she is into the 'scotch eggs' (bleurgh!) and the bacon!
I make things like lentil croquettes, a good finger food, and little tofu burgers. will watch this thread with interest, as DD2 is about to start weaning!
