6m new to solids snacking from breast all day

DS will be 6m next week and I've started to introduce solids, which he is going after with gusto.

However he has become very whiney unless he has constant access to the breast, much more so even than when newly born. He takes a couple of sips, little play or chat, few sips, stare around the room, play with hands, few sips, etc. All day atm... When I try to cover up / put him dowm he gets cross and begins to root urgently. He is grabbing and playing with me quite a lot too, which is painful.

Didn't have this with DD who seemed happy with a good long feed every few hours once solids came on the scene.

Possibly teething, too, loads of dribble going on.

So what am I actually asking here... Can anyone advise me whether I should just leave my bra off for a few days and stick DVDs on (again), or should I start trying to encourage him to find other activities. Having a phased return to work from end of Feb and am beginning to think about mixed feeding, but would like to keep the convenience of bfing at night for as long as possible, so trying to resist that.

Not making a lot of sense at the mo, sorry, almost too tired to see the screen and have small man objecting loudly to me turning away for a bit! Thanks.

Oh just remembered the other thing wanted to ask about - my supply has gone whacky, I seem to be either engorged or floppy due to all the snacking, my breasts are more used to big feeds every few hours nowadays, this is probably partly why he is so grumpy.

Bit discouraged by it all, had been looking forward to weaning giving me a little break when actually it seems to have sent everything doolally!

Might have the chance of a sleep shortly so thanks in advance for any replies, will check back later.

Bump for the evening! Grabbed a sleep this afternoon, strength restored a bit, thank goodness.

Sorry, not much useful to say except that he might be teething (as you suggest) and bfing for comfort. If it is that then he should settle down within a couple of weeks. (If you think he is teething, you could try giving him a dose of Calpol or whatever is allowed for 6-mo-olds - sorry, been a while since I had one - if he feels more comfortable he might give you a break?)

Good for you Snotbaby, for still bf at 6 months. I think your problem is a small blip, possibly caused by teething but probably will sort itself out pretty soon. Don't worry. You might like to try to distract him with toys etc, offer water with solids so he's not too thirsty, and also absent yourself for an hour or two after a good feed if you have some one available to look after him; or you might take him out for a walk in a push chair (they usually like that). Glad you managed a rest after your OP - take all opportunities and don't worry about the future. It will sort itself out.

Thank you Pollytroll and Elasticwoman for your supportive posts!

I did try some water yesterday and it made a small (but appreciated) difference to the amount of snacking, so thank you for that.

snotbaby, i would go with the flow. my second and third children were both exactly the same. I guess they were just a bit more thirsty or something? no idea really but they def went back to a weird newborn feeding pattern when they started solids.

it definitely had settled down within a week or so though

Thanks TIY, that's encouraging! I have noticed my supply adapting slightly since Tuesday, I seem better able to produce little and often again. At least parts of me know what they are supposed to be doing!
