Ds2 is almost 7mth old and hardly eating any solids. I started doing some purees and some finger foods. He gags quite a lot with purees and that seems to be getting worse not better and when he has finger foods (toast, carrot, brocolli, cheese) he bites bits off but i really don't think he actually swallows any, he pushes it back out with his tongue.

Should i be worried about him? Will he get better? Ds1 was so different.

And also can i have some finger food ideas

Phoenix, your DS sounds very similar to my 7m DD and I was just about to post a very similar question! She is okish with some purees, but doesn't really seem bothered and finger foods are a disaster, she just picks them up and looks at them, won't even put them in her mouth. Glad I'm not alone. Hope you get some useful replies .

Phoenix hey, how are you...funny I was wondering the same too! I am more worried that my LO is not getting enough iron (as opposed to calories). Food does NOT interest him.

Anyone out there to help us????

Hello,
Just to say my DS was the same and has only recently started to take an interest aged 10 months. I gave him vitamins and was getting nervous about iron when he started to eat more. He has been on purees (after a sadly useless start at BLW)and only in the past few days has he worked out what to do with finger food (and most is still ending up on the floor). So it will happen, I just think some babies take longer than others.

I gave him carrot sticks for tea and he didn't eat any. He's happy enough squishing them in his hand and does put them to his mouth but he doesn't eat them. I also tried him with a heinz baby 'meal' that you add water to (mediterranean veg and rice or something) and he ate every last bit with no gagging .

He's sat on my knee now gnawing on an apple but again any bits he breaks off he pushes out of his mouth.

if they're pushing the food back out it's because they aren't really ready for food yet. it's fine for them to chomp away and have fun then let it all fall out again

or you can try to bypass this by making it really really runny and spooning it in.

I wouldn't worry about it - they are getting all the required nutrients from breastmilk or formula at this stage, let them explore food in their own time, IME it suddenly "clicks" into place for them at some point - for my DS this wasn't until about 14 months! But having said that he's perfectly healthy and has even jumped through the centiles, so it has worked for us just waiting until he was ready in his own time.
