Did anyone wean before 4 months?

Hello! This is my first post.
My baby is 14 weeks old and mainly breastfed. Because she seems to struggle to get full I give her at least one bottle of formula per day (usually at night time so she'll sleep for a longer time. She seems very interested in our meals and I'm thinking of weaning her early. I'd like to hear about peoples experiences of weaning before the recommended 6 months and any advice.

Well, there was another case in a family we know. The mother exclusively breastfeeds the baby day and night, but the baby is not getting much, cause she is just not producing that much. Baby is hungry all the time, but because HV recommends not to mix, baby stays hungry. But she did everything right, didn't she.

If it was me, and I would remember my mother did that to me, I would kill her slowly. Thanks to god my mother was lovely. She breastfed me for 3 months only. Then I refused completely. Got all the good stuff thereafter: Cow milk, bananas, mash, intestines, everything nicely blended.

and this

Norash · 08/07/2005 01:14

Why don't all of you anti-early weaners right to Tony Blair and ask "THIS GOVERNMENT" to take all those products on the shelves that say from "4 Months"

Norash · 08/07/2005 01:14

Somebody kill this thread.

micha26 · 08/07/2005 01:14

And this one is for Jamie Oliver: I still think your recipes are rubbish and my mum (at the age of 85) cooks ten times better than you.

micha26 · 08/07/2005 01:17

Still wonder how Milupa and Hipp are doing so well in this country. Bad germans. Or are we experiencing the dawn of early weaning?

thymes2 · 08/07/2005 01:17

I have decided to wait for as long as I can. I will speak to my health visitor again in about a month.
Thanks to everyone who didn't post inflammatory remarks

Thymes2 sorry if this thread turned out badly, this was not the intention .

Welcome to Mumsnet, hope you enjoy yourself and find it as useful as I and many others have.

Actually, we have to be careful. Anti-weaning activists might ambush in front of the offending supermarkets and drug-stores, and report us to social services. Or even worse, track down our IP addresses. I'm really scared now

aloha · 08/07/2005 10:42

yes, i was referring to deliberately putting babies down to sleep on their tummies, knowing it increases their risk of dying. I would say, each to their own, but babies can't make decisions. They are uniquely vulnerable.
For introducing solids, I would say, think at least about not doing so before the end of four months (ie five months) at least.
It isn't a race.

HMo2, agree. Would also say it's FAR easier to wait till your baby's sitting up properly, grabbing for food and can cope with pieces of food. DS has never had a problem with lumps

Aloha, it does make me wonder when people proudly announce their 10-week-old is ready for solids and say their gut must have matured faster as if it's some kind of achievement when they're just plain wrong!

hercules · 08/07/2005 16:42

Yehhhhhhh, Happymomoftwo! Lovin you right back!

Trouble is, Mich26, you lose the argument when you are so downright nasty.

hercules · 08/07/2005 16:42

actually my baby was ready at 10 days but I dont like to brag.....

hunkermunker · 08/07/2005 16:44

Ten days, Hercules?! What was your baby? Slow or summat?! DS came out scoffing a creme egg.

hercules · 08/07/2005 16:45

Well, I was guilt tripped into waiting for the day days tbh.

Just read Twigglets post near the beggining of the thread. My mum has always said that I was on 3 solid meals a day by the time I was 12 weeks. I now suffer with Asthma, exzema and Hayfever. I knew these were all linked but have never heard of the link with early weaning .

My mum did all of this to me.

hercules · 08/07/2005 17:32

The point is Distel, she didnt know!!

My mum smoked through her pregnancies, bottlefed, early weaning and there are a lot problems in my family with us all as adults which are linked to these things.

No ones fault though.

I'd never blame her for it.

Makes you wonder if I would have these problems if it diddn't happen. There is a family history of these things so chances are, I would still have them, but you never know.

Distel · 08/07/2005 17:38

sorry, read my post again.......does sound a bit harsh
