Who to cook courgettes for a BLW baby

Hi all,

My DD has started eating solids and I was wondering which is the best way of cooking courgettes for her. Should I peel the skin? I am not sure which is the best method of cooking it, should I steam it or should I cook it in the oven? We are doing BLW which she loves as she likes putting the food in her mouth.

Thanks in advance for all your comments

I'm steaming for about 7 minutes. One of her favourites so far.

belindarose · 26/01/2010 16:04

With skin on - she spits it out eventually!

Roast or steamed are both good. I always just left the skin on, makes it easier for them to hold

We have our on-site michelin chef prepare ours.

HTH.

Seriously, I cooked them in lots of ways from the beginning. DD really liked ratatouille iirc.

lol SOH

I gave DD (my first BLWer) the same meals as us from about 7 1/2 months, DS (second BLWer) has pretty much always just eaten what we're having. It's easy to over think the whole thing TBH.

Annabel Karmel (I do like her recipes - just look in the 9-12 and 12-18mth section instead of weaning sections of her books and you find lots of great food that BLW babies can eat! Our babies are so clever!) says all the nutrition is in the skin so leave it on.

Steam or boil in sticks (cut very chunky slices slightly diagonally and then cut in harf is a good way). Roast too.

Slice them, place on a bit of oiled silver foil and bung them in a 180 degree oven for about 12-15 minutes. I have started scattering some different herbs in as well. DS loves them.

This also works well if you put a piece of white fish (plaice good) and some cherry tomatoes in and cook for the same amount of time - no pan dinner!

I just slice them and put them in bowl with a small amount of water and microwave them for a couple of minutes - same as steaming.

Mareta · 27/01/2010 11:11

How safe it is to use microwave for babies? We haven't had one till a couple of months ago when we found it very useful to heat up our food.

Not sure if I would like to use mcriwave with my daughter. Any experiences using microwave or am I being paranoied?

steam with skins on in batons - DS2 loves it this way and has since he was 6 months old - or when they're older make courgette fritters (with homemade breadcrumb coat) - both DS2 and DS1 go crazy for these.

HerMomminess · 27/01/2010 11:38

Hi Mareta, How's it going? Agree with the above: roats/steam.Leave the skin on. As for microwave: I have no issues using it. Afterall: steam sterilisers etc go into it too.

We have also tried avo in toasted mini pita breads- cut into strips.

And melon!! OMG-hilarious! She is managing to 'bite' pieces off with her gums and some goes in...some comes bakc out.

CultureMix · 27/01/2010 15:12

Concur with everyone, keep skin on, otherwise once cooked it will completely disintegrate and there's nothing left for baby to hold onto. Besides that way you can tell she's actually eating it as the skins will end out the other end in the nappy.

I tend to favour sticks rather than slices but either work. Both DSs love courgettes, I always have some in my shopping trolley.

Thank y very much for all your replys.

Hi Hermummyness, DD hasd avocado yesterday for first time anshe loved it. I gave it to her in sticks and it was very funny seeing her picking it up and takeing it to her mouth. She also loves gree beans but I think she strougles with Brocolli. I think the head of the floret may have been too big foher and she couldn't/didn't know how to put it in her mouth. I will try again and see what happens.

Tomorrow we will have courgettes for lunch!!!!!!

Thank you again
