Are these foods ok for blw?

Cashew nut butter- because nuts are a choking hazard aren't they? as opposed to allergens? Therefore I assume if ground up it will be alright.

Multigrain bread- is this a choking hazard due to the seeds?

Thank you- new blwer here!

All foods excpet honey between 6 and 12 months, but if history of allergy then avoid known allergenic foods. So the butter is fine if you have no food allergies in your family history.

Not sure about multigrain. If not overly 'nutty' then I'd say okay if used to other bread already but perhaps not as a very first food.

I'm a novice here but the above is my understanding.

BertieBotts · 20/01/2010 02:12

I would probably avoid the bread until the pincer grip is developed and they are eating raisins etc easily - probably over-paranoid, but I don't tend to eat that kind of bread much so it wouldn't be a big problem for me. If it is a problem for you, how about getting a loaf of white (better for babies' digestion) bread and putting in the freezer, then toasting slices individually from frozen for now? I found bread was difficult for DS to manage in the beginning as it's quite claggy, but toast was the first thing he ever ate.

Thanks very much! It's not a problem to give white- he's had some before and seems to like it. We just have multigrain in at the moment, that's all!

Multigrain should be totally fine, and I say this as someone whose daughter gagged on practically everything for months. We always feed M/G.

In Australia, common wisdom is to avoid all nuts till 1 year, because if your child is allergic it's much much harder to treat anaphylactic (sp?) shock in an under-1. Don't know about the UK guidelines but that one's pretty strict here.

Good luck!

JustAnotherManicMummy · 20/01/2010 04:34

UK peanut guidelines revised about 6 months ago to say they're ok/no evidence of increased allergy by eating early. All other nut ok to consume but need to think carefully about if they will be a choking hazard - DS is 9mo and has eaten ceral with nuts in it and flapjack type things and was fine but it depends on the child. If you need a link to the guidelines let me know and I'll dig it out.

Mutligrain bread is fine. DS has been playing with it since he was 5.5 mo when he started swiping food off plates. Actually swallowed some around 6 mo - could see the seeds in his nappy!

The only foods DoH say to avoid are honey as hobbgoblin rightly says and giving cows milk as a drink. And the allergy bit as hobb says.

There is very little a BLW can't eat but more s/he won't eat What's a favourite one day is cast aside the next in favour of something else.

Good luck and enjoy!

JustAnotherManicMummy · 20/01/2010 04:35

Oh and DS at 6mo was a fan of crunchy peanut butter like his daddy (Yuk) so don't worry if your nut butter isn't completely smooth.

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 20/01/2010 06:10

Thanks tortoise and JAMM. Those guidelines would be great if you get a chance

this is from the food standards agency re nuts:

If your baby has already been diagnosed with an allergy, such as a food allergy or eczema, or if there is a history of allergy in their immediate family (if their parents, brothers or sisters have an allergy such as a food allergy, asthma, eczema, hayfever, or other types of allergy) then your baby has a higher risk of developing peanut allergy. So you should talk to your GP, health visitor or medical allergy specialist before you give peanuts or foods containing peanuts to your baby for the first time.

If your baby hasn't been diagnosed with any allergies and there isn't a history of allergy in their immediate family, you can choose to give them peanuts or foods containing peanuts after they are six months old. But remember to crush them up ? you should never give whole peanuts or nuts to children under five because of the risk of choking.

When you give your baby peanuts for the first time, look out for any allergic reaction. If you think your child is having an allergic reaction, you should get urgent medical advice.

Thanks! Ds has a suspected cows milk allergy and I've been avoiding peanuts so I think I'll wait a while. However cashews should be fine shouldn't they? I seem to remember that a peanut is not actually a nut- it's a pea. I have certainly eaten other nuts whilst pg and bfing.

We took the try everything except honey and cow's milk to drink approach from 6mo. And just made sure everything was managable in terms of size and consistency for his current eating ability.

DS had an allergic reaction to egg but is ok with products with egg in them. My mother has a shellfish allergy but DS is fine with prawns. I don't give him kiwi because I have an nasty allergy and he's being tested before we introduce. I keep a closer eye on him when introducing new foods in case of reaction as even looking at family history you can't predict.

I'd try the nut butter and see how it goes.

hobbgoblin · 20/01/2010 17:06

I haven't posted much on BLW as I feel quite unsure about it all as a complete novice!

However, I have proudly given my DD curried chicen chapati today. This is so much more enjoyable than the doling out mush I did with my older DC.

How have you got on Paranoid?

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 22/01/2010 23:16

Well I still haven't been brave enough to try the nut butter . I may bite the bullet and give him some tomorrow though.

Multigrain bread went down well though- seeds in nappy- check.

My babies love cashew butter and I also tend to use whatever bread I'm eating - they particularly like granary rolls and now that they've had 'fancy' bread tend not to eat very much plain white toast anymore - it goes over the side of the high chair!1
