Help! DD1 is 23 weeks old. For the past week have been offering her finger foods- huge success in my books. And hers I think. She seems to 'enjoy' the play&food is defo going in FWIW.

Lunch with friends today- they were totally commenting on how 'nuts' I am & warned more than once re choking.

I watch her like a hawk. So far some coughing but no chokes.

Am I wrong? Should I just puree? Have I started 'too early'?

Surely if she is managing to gnaw off pieces and either swallows it or if too big pushes it to front of her mouth she is doing the leading?

Reassurance/critisim if I' m a dangerous first time mum nutter.

meh, they're wrong you're right!

babies DO gag, it's a reflex, she may well cough a lot and that brings the food to the front pof the mouth. ds3 used to do that a LOT, but now he is fine

he is 7 months nearly and has never choked. ds2 was BLW and choked once, but that was when he was over a year and was shoving too much in

she is doing fine

People get really hung up on 'choking'. It's a bit of a hangover from early weaning on purees when babies did choke when they were faced with their first bit of texture. Actually, babies (and everyone else) are more likely to choke if someone else is feeding them as they're less in control of managing the food in their mouths. Sounds like you're both doing great.

Sounds marvellous. I adored blw. DD didn't choke once. You're right, they only take what they can handle and are very good at moving larger pieces back to the front of their mouths.

Enjoy it, it's such a pleasure sharing food with your child.

Ok, another 'flaky' question: she gets really frustrated if food is too slippy to pick up. I confess: I hand it to her...does that in fact mean she isn' t 'ready' even though we have been doing it for nearly 2 weeks?

I was reading the banana test advice again.

She does however manage to pick up stuff herself and put it in her mouth. And sits in Bumbo with a tray.

If you're offering banana then make sure you break off a piece and don't cut it as it's really slippery when sliced.
