I was wondering this morning how old dd needs to be before offering raisins as finger food. She adores malt loaf, fruit breads etc and chews like a trouper so much so that nursery have commented on her ability to eat . Although I have been pretty relaxed about letting her feed herself am bit worried about smaller items ifykwim.. Are raisins ok? Would she be likely to choke? Obviously I dont leave her alone when eating.. I dug out some sultanas this morning but luckily checked bb date before handing them over.. April 2008... thought best not

one thing you do have to be careful about giving dried fruit is that they stick to teeth and cause decay.

Thats interesting.. hadn't thought of that> guess malt loaf, fruit loaf would be a major contender for that then....

I give them to DS but he is coming up to 11mths. I did try him with them around 9 1/2 mths but he stuffed them all in in one go and got upset when he couldn't chew or swallo, he's a lot better now and not over filling.

I've been giving them to DS since he was around 7 months, once he was able to pick them up himself and eat them. They are a great snack to take out and about, as when he is grumpy they distract him as he has to concentrate to pick them up. They do tend to come out the other end looking just like they did when they went in though. I try and give them one at a time from my hand, or else put a few on his tray spaced out for him to pick up.
