Started BLW but baby ravenous - filling food ideas

I'm in the very early weeks of BLW DS2 (6.5mths) so he's happily gumming various bits of fruit & veg but digesting very little. All fine & dandy there except he is drinking so much milk: 12-14oz at bedtime followed by 2 x 9oz night feeds then 9oz 3 hourly through the day with 3 'meals' slotted in between . I first thought growth spurt but it's been over a week now & whilst he's always been a big drinker, this is really quite something else not to mention costing me a small fortune in milk!!!

Any ideas for more filling foods I can offer with the added complication that he is potentially allergic so avoiding wheat, fish, dairy etc at this early stage.

Cheers
LCN

When will you find out about his allergies?

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/01/2010 21:52

if he's drinking milk, what's the logic behind avoiding dairy? i'm genuinely asking.
it's not uncommon for a growth spurt to last a fortnight, i thought, and it's six bottles, isn't it? is that such a lot? (can't remember, but dd is sixteen months and still has a fair bit of milk).
what about steak, pork, chicken, are you up for that? both of my dd's really liked meat from an early age.

Lentils?

BFing here, so don't know about quantities, but there is a growth spurt around that age. Ask your HV if you're worried.

Tesco Free From range have crumpets and stuff, you could try that with him?

notsotinybaba · 09/01/2010 22:12

Bananas seem to fill my LO up, and she's a 2-weetabix girl (3 weetabix during a growth spurt!!!!!)

lechatnoir · 10/01/2010 00:02

Thanks guys. I'm certainly not worried just hoping to find something that fills him as he's obviously peckish! Hadn't realised growth spurts can last so long - always assumed a few days - so it could well be just that.

Aitch it's 7 feeds (5 day & 2 night) and one of those is so big we need 2 bottles -maybe it's not an issue at all just sounds such a lot for a little chap . Reason for avoiding dairy etc: he was diagnosed milk allergy at 4 mths due to eczema but I wasn't convinced the precribed formula agreed with him so tried him on normal formula about 2 weeks ago & pretty much since then that he's started drinking this quantity plus I've started weaning. As he still has horrible eczema Paede has warned he may have other allergies & to wean slowly starting with low allergenic foods like fruit & veg, rice. I haven't tried meat yet but sure chicken & lamb will be OK & I'm think he'll enjoy them so will give them a go. Thanks. Oh, and they won't allergy test until much nearer 1 (at least 9 months) so a lot of caution & guesswork when he might not even be allergic to anything

Thanks to you all for suggestions.

don't get me wrong, lcn, it does sound like a lot of milk, but it may not be that it's something worth concerning yourself with just yet. it doesn't always follow, of course, but perhaps you can take some comfort that if your wee boy has an instant reaction in the mouth to something he's eating, he will at least be able to spit it out. my pal gave her wee boy an ak puree with papaya in it and he ate it all up then erupted in eczema so bad he looked like he should be in the burns unit, so if i was you i'd steer clear of tropical fruit for the moment. (unless his dna is tropical, of course.)

navyeyelasH · 10/01/2010 10:54

You could spoon feed him and BLW - then you know how much he is eating from the spoon. Potato is quite filling I think! Also some types of forumla are more filling than others - what one are you using?

PS> Tesco and other supermarket 'free from' ranges quite often aren't 'free from!' More like 98% free from. Orgran, tru free & dietary specials I find are the best and be cautious with corn based products, if you are worried about allergies.

lechatnoir · 10/01/2010 11:33

Thanks again. Haven't tried potato yet so will give that a go soon. He's on Hipp Organic and TBH I'm really loathe to change formula again as he does seem very happy (albeit hungry) on this one and he's been through so many these past few months.
