BLW, other people's food, and salt...

I'm working my way through Gill Rapley's book at the moment.

One thing I'm not clear about, though... it's easy to cut out salt from your cooking at home, but what about if you're, say, having a pub lunch, or at someone else's house?

I'm sure it's fine for a baby to have a bit of salt here and there- if you take care that you add no salt at home, and don't buy food with high salt content.
It's the repetitive overloading kidneys with salt that's dangerous.

and use your brain in pubs etc

eg chips but no gravy

Well gravy's easy - but how about vegetables - it makes it clear you shouldn't cook them in salted water but presumably most restaurants do?

if it's only occasionally and in restaurants then I'd taste and see

Longtalljosie · 07/01/2010 12:22

Cool - thank you. I've barely seen a restaurant since late pregnancy so I guess it's not going to be a frequent issue!

NB one of the best things (IME) about BLW is making you relax about the whole thing, so try not to get too stressed about it

Just think, if they have 3 well-balanced, salt-free meals a day at home and eat out once a week, that is [calculates] a ratio of 20:1

don't sweat it!

IslandIsla · 08/01/2010 20:00

I agree - don't sweat it! Since DD has been weaning (shes 9 mos now) we've gone out to eat at least once a week and she always eats the food we order.
To start with she hardly ate any of the food anyway, so certainly don't worry too much in the early stages.
Now she eats more I do think about the salt content a little more, having said that I let her eat most things from a restaurant menu!
