Thinking of doing BLW with my DD when should I start?

Hi everybody,

Last Wednesday HV came to introduce me to weaning. Since then I have been seriously thinking of doing BLW with my DD. However the HV told me to start SLW at 24 weeks. Should I try BLW at 24 weeks or should I wait till she is 26 weeks? She is EBF at the moment and I won't stop BF her until she says that doesn't want any more my milk.

DD seems very interested in food right now and is always looking at me when I am eating. I usually sit her in her highchair while I am having my lunch and she will follow the spoon/fork from the plate into my mouth which I find really funny. I have ordered a copy of Gill Rapley book which should arrive by the end of the week but I would like to know what other mothers/fathers have done as I don't have friends who have used the same approach.

Any comments will be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance

If your DD is sitting up unaided, then put some soft carrot sticks in front of her and see what she does - if she picks it up, puts it into her mouth, then she's ready for the BLW journey pretty much. I waited til 26 wks but I think I'll be a tad more relaxed with DS2 so think I would try this if he seemed interested at 24 weeks.

She is 22 weeks at the moment and not sure what to do. She sits unaid at the moment on the floor but sometimes she topples over however when she is in her highchair she stays still. I always give her a spoon while she is in her highchair and put it in her mouth but I think it is because she is teething at the moment and finds a lot of comfort in bitting it.

I just wonder if it is too early or I should try and see what happens. The HV couldn't help me when I asked her about BLW because she has not been trained on this subject.

Yesterday I was drinking water from a glass and she was on my lap, she grabed it and brought it to her mouth and started bitting it. I don't give her any water but she always looks very interested when I am having my cup of tea in the morning.

I guess I am just looking for some reasurance just because I feel that guidelines needs to be follow but I can also see that my DD is very advance for a lot of thinks that according to guidelines she should be doing if she was a bit older. I guess that being a first time mum does not help either.

I would think that blw means that if the baby is physically capable of picking up food and putting it in her mouth, i wouldn't stop her - treat it like any other toy - you might want to stick to fruit/veg though. She is unlikely to actually eat/ absorb calories from the food for a little while yet.
