Breakfast for 6 month old - ideas needed!

DS2 is 6.5months old, been weaned since 20 weeks, eats like a horse!! Am struggling with breakfast cereal inspiration. He loves the baby breakfasts but eats so much I only get average of 4 breakfasts out of a box so is costing me a fortune. He doesn't like weetabix. Any other ideas??

I did think maybe Readybrek but does this have to be made up with formula or can he have full fat milk in it (totally forgotten from first time round with DS1 when I was 'weaning queen' )

TIA

readybrek is great and can be made up with whatever you like, i tend to boil the kettle and use that to make it thick but hot, then cool it down with cold milk to make it taste nicer and make it a better texture

toast

pancakes

fruit

yoghurt

Yes, can have full fat cow's milk in food from 6 months so that would be fine in readybrek. DD used to like porridge, weetabix or mini-wheats at this age (soften the miniwheats in a little milk and she would pick them up and eat them).

Mine had full fat milk on their cereal from then (was more a taste thing for having formula). Could try porridge oats too, easy to make. is he able to eat toast/bananas yet to help fill him up?

ready brek

rolled oats with milk, either hot as porridge or cold with cold milk

toast fingers with marmite, banana, cream cheese, fruit puree

stewed fruits with Greek yoghurt

all sorts of breads - teacakes with butter, cut into wedges, wraps rolled up with mashed banana and cream cheese filling, bits of sort bread with mashed fruit and creme fraiche

bits of soft bread, sorry!

Wilkiepedia · 29/12/2009 22:01

Oooo brilliant girls thank you!

My main concern was the full fat milk thing so will try readybrek with some stewed fruit.

I will defo try him with some fingerfood for 'afters' - am not a BLW fan so I feel happier if he has filled up on something substantial and then can pick at the break/toast etc afterwards. He LOVES his food!

Thank you for helping me save money!!!!!!

Oh gosh all sorts.

Cereals with cow's milk. Porridge was a firm fave here.

Eggs, scrambled, poached, boiled, omelette etc

Pancakes

Yoghurts and fruit

Toast, muffins, bagels, eggy bread

Whatever you'd have!

Wilkiepedia · 29/12/2009 22:04

Isn't it funny how you forget - or is it just laziness as having to sort out myself, the 3yo DS1 then DS2!!!! PLus I HATE breakfast so can't get excited about it!

i am strggling with breakfast too my 6 month old only really likes apple n pear with baby rice - what age can they have toast 9 years since i have done this

RubyBuckleberry · 05/05/2010 19:04

my ds had toast at 6 months. in fact it is a good idea to introduce gluten earlier rather than later to help prevent coeliac disease.

(no expert - just some study done in sweden.)

Good grief, my 7.5 month DS just has a BF, he's not interested in breakfast at all! Am very of your breakfast-eating DCs!

My ds loved weetabix mixed with mashed banana, would that be worth a try maybe, or is he totally anti weetabix??

smallorange · 15/05/2010 07:47

Mashed up boiled egg and toast fingers followed by some fruit filled up my grubber of a DD3. You need dense fat and protein - weetabix will fill them up by not supply the calories so not very satisfying.

My DS loves all types of cereal now he has worked out his pincer grip. Particularly he loves mini shredded wheat (especially fruit flavoured) and shreddies just softened with milk, or rice crispies and noughts and crosses dry. Followed by a piece of fruit or he also has toast sometimes, but as I always have cereal that seems the easiest thing to give him.
