6.5 mo being weaned - looking for advice/reassurance!

Hi

MY DD is 6.5 mo. I started weaning her a week before she turned 6 months. I wanted to do a mix of BLW and purees as this is what I did with DS and it worked a treat.

DD loves rice cakes and toast (and a biscuit that DS kindly gave her when I wasn't looking ) but won't go near any other finger food like carrots, pasta, pear etc.

On the puree side, she loves pear and apple but my homemade veg ones, she won't have a bar of. She will however eat any of the Ella Organics or Plum ranges - no matter what is in them.

I know I shouldn't compare babies but she is so different to DS who loved his food that I just need reassurance that it will come. I know she is young and has only just started but I wonder if anyone has advice. Should I stick to just veg/fruit at the moment until she seems to like them or move her onto more family meals (eg shepherds pie etc etc) which is what I did with DS?

I am slightly concerned that when she has the bought foods, she hoovers them down but not mine - I don't want to continue down that road. She does still love her milk which is great - she has 4 or 5 feeds during the day (she has slept through since being tiny). I don't think I should be cutting her feeds down yet?

Hi.
My ds2 is soooooo different from my ds1. I started weaning ds2 at about 5.5 months on home made purees as that's what I did with ds1.
Ds1 loved it and would eat anything until he turned 7 ish months and started teething. From then he would only eat jarred food and he would only eat it cold (yuk) I fed him to how he wanted because I thought at the time that it was best to just follow his wants. He'd been on a prescription formula and had come off milk feeds very fast so there was also that concern.
ds2 is now 10 months and sometimes has 2 bottles a day and sometimes has 4.
I started spoon feeding him, but after 3 weeks, gave up as he wasn't really that interested if it wasn't fruit or yogurt so I started putting 'proper' food infront of him and haven't looked back.
But like you say, all babies are very different and I'm sure your dd will tell you what she needs and when.
Remember 'food is fun until they're 1' so in all likely hood, she is getting all she needs from the milk, so use thenext few months/weeks experimenting with different types and textures of foods and see what happens.

I found that DD would turn her nose up at particular veg purees, but if I mixed them with pear or apple she loved them. Now I can give her the veg without the fruit and she will eat it. Her favourites were courgette and apple, pear and parsnip and potato and apple. Sound vile, but she liked them!

Thanks everyone. Funnily enough after posting the message, I went off to feed DD with some squash mixed with rice and she ate quite a lot of it so am telling myself to relax more . But also will try mixing with fruits as suggested if not.

dd2 is also 6.5 months and isnt very enthused with weaning either! at the mo she is having 5 bottles and 2 meals a day! it feels like i'm constantly feeding her! have you started reducing milk yet? dd2 doesnt seem to be eating enough food to fill her yet.

i dont remember it being this difficult with dd1!!

I have reduced her by 1 bottle now - doesn't seem to make much difference to the amount she is eating. She is on 3 "meals" though.

She's now teething which is affecting her too!

I'm demand BF so she gets as much or as little milk as she wants. However, she has reduced the amount she feeds - she was feeding 9 times over a 24 hour period, and now she's down to 5 or 6 times (unfortunately, 2 of these are overnight!)

She's going great guns compared to my ds of the same age who has only shown the mildest enthusiasm for gumming a rice cake so far! I do remember that my dd was very slow to get going with solids (BLW) but got there eventually and has always been a fabulous eater. It used to help me to remember that milk is their main food until they're one so there's 6 months for them to build up to 'proper meals'. And if she's sleeping through then she can't be hungry.
