Oh dear, stern look from a hv today...(and a question)...

...all because I mentioned that I was planning to do BLW with my DS.

She looked at the other HV in the room and both sort of went 'hmmm' as if to say 'oh man another Mummy who doesn't appreciate the good old ways and want to choke/starve her baby'.

I was so cross I nearly asked them to go and look at their NHS Guidance on weaning which states that babies should be offered finger foods from 6 months regardless of weaning technique.

I did BLW with DD from 6 months and she is the least fussy eater I have ever met. Now that may all be completely coincidental but I'm sure it did help in some way.

I am also cross as they told me that DS was 'dropping weight' when in fact what they mean is he is putting it on but at a slightly slower rate - to me a clear indication he is ready to wean (amongst other signs!) and is more active too. If I had been a new mum or less sure of myself I would have thought they were telling he that he was loosing weight and been panicking that I'd been starving him!

So, on that note...DS is 5 and a half months today. I know BLW is from 6 months so will there be any issues with him having baby rice for a few weeks then moving him onto BLW foods??

Sorry for the moan but I was so cross with them!

dd2 started eating food around then, tbh, she was really interested in it and managed fine with some steamed carrot and a bit of steak etc. i'd give that a shot first, personally.

vvvodka · 17/12/2009 17:02

my niece and dd both refused purees of any sort. they did blw coz they liked it.

MrsJamin · 17/12/2009 18:58

why would you do baby rice for a few weeks - just to appease the dark-ages-hvs? You seem set on BLW so stick to your principles - I will be for DS2 as I was for DS1, BLW, and he's the least fussy child I know too.

TulipsAndTinsel · 17/12/2009 19:02

ds2 started BLW at 5 months.

the general rule is if they can feed themselves there's no real harm in letting them

i've been lucky, all the health professionals i've dealt with are extremely pro BLW, sorry you got such a tosser

MrsBadger · 17/12/2009 19:12

if she can sit up and put things in her mouth then it won't hurt to start blw now - the 'baby led' bit is the giveaway

I kept it to myself and only really discussed it with OH. My mum thought it was weird, MIL never really understood what we were doing.
Hence the time spent on forums! None of my friends did BLW, but the puree method instead. My friend who has a baby the same age asked me, when they were about 8mo, whether BB was having lumps yet and my reply was something like 'he's always had normal food'.
For some reason, weaning babies seems to invite loads of opinions from people.
Stick to your guns if you feel it's the right thing to do.

We started BLW at 5.5 as BB was grabbing everything; the odd bit of banana, broccoli etc - and I gave him toast a few days short of 6months. He wouldn't touch baby rice or baby porridge.

We did BLW from 5 and a bit months too. Never really discussed it with HV, she asked how we were getting on with solids and i said we were doing fine, that was it. At 8 month check she asked if she was eating finger food and I said yes.

Thanks for the replies

He jams pretty much anything in his mouth and is really nifty with a spoon - I did the same with DD and let her play with a spoon for a week or two before weaning.

I think I'm just going to go ahead and see what he likes from today. Maybe a nice chunk of banana at dinner (his most jealous-of-the-nice-food time) and go from there
