No point to ready brek - just buy normal oats and cook with milk.

theagedparent · 12/12/2009 15:12

Is it really salt free? I remember something on the news a while ago about a baby eating ready brek and being overdosed on salt. Probably ate a lot of though.

MrsBadger · 12/12/2009 15:18

yes it's sugar and salt free, but real porridge is even cheaper

baby packets waste of money imo

the news story was ready brek, mashed potato and gravy - the gravy was the salty element.

oh yes, wonderful baby breakfast and my 3 year old still loves it! the other 2 were more into weetabix. porridge may be cheaper but it takes longer which is key for us when babies (and kids!) want fed straight away!

(FWIW we use the Tesco version at about half the price but haven't checked salt content)

god i hope you dont think im stupid but is it ok to pick any pack of cheap porridge and give it. i had no idea. its my first baby!!! one more thing do i use her formula milk or full fat cows milk???

Ready Brek has not done well out of that story. The baby did overdose on salt and the baby did eat ready brek. The two were mutually exclusive, the ready brek was just used as an example of the poor food choices the parents were making for a baby.

Nothing wrong with ready brek at all but porridge oats and milk is cheaper.

My dd just had whatever we were having for breakfast from weaning age. Pancakes, eggs, cereals, porridge, muffins, fruit, yoghurt etc.

tassisssss · 12/12/2009 15:24

you're not stupid, just haven't had to know before!

any packet of regular oats will be fine. I gave full fat cows milk in food from 6 months (I didn't use formula) but if you're making up formula anyways you can use that. either's fine.

hope she likes it!

Avoid those tiny packets of baby cereal, they're a rip off! And don't last anytime at all (or not with my hungry guys!). Mine also liked weetabix as I said at this stage, often with mashed banana through it.

Oats from the supermarket, made up with cows milk, just fine.

With the exceptions of added salt, honey, strawberries etc (things you avoid until 12 months), from 6 months your baby can pretty much eat what you eat assuming you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Cow's milk for cooking/cereal only though.
