baby led weaning and reflux - bad idea?

DD2 is coming up to 6 months and I wanted to start her on BLW but she has always been quite refluxy - it has never caused her much pain (as long as I avoided trigger foods like pineapple, berries, citrus etc) but the time approaches to start thinking about offering her solids I am starting to seriously panic that this approach isn't right for a refluxy baby. Please tell me your experiences....

Well my DD has reflux and I'm going for it. If we hit the buffers I'll dust off the blender...

Although I won't be able to tell you how it went for a while - she's nowhere near 6 months yet...

We did with DD and had no problems - if anything she was worse if she did have a puree as it just came up like milk. Proper solids seemed to stay down better. You won't lose anything in trying it, you can always change to purees if it is not working out, or do both.

I did it with my ds, now 1. His reflux didn't completely get better until about 9mo but he really took to BLW and has never really been spoon fed. When we first started he did tend to gag (as described in the BLW book) and that would often make him bring up quite a lot of milk. It didn't seem to bother him at all (although I got a bit nervous!) and only happened for the first couple of weeks, after which he was absolutely fine. Good luck!

DS was awful to feed by spoon but was better with BLW as he had reflux.

DD has been fine with BLW - she has thrown up much less and been more settled.

She seems to like starchy things like bread and potatoes which help to keep everything down.

thanks everyone - has reassured me abit - particularly your post pixsix as when I gave her a crust to suck on the other day she swallowed a bit accidentally and she gagged and brought a whole load of milk up including out of her nose - she didn't look that bothered but it really frightened me. Made me think maybe she couldn't do BLW. Am still going to wait at least another fortnight as she's not 6 months till 23 dec. Was even going to wait till the New year to start offering her stuff.

Glad it helped. Good luck if you do decide to do BLW, it's worked out really well for us and I'd definitely recommend it.

Hi My little boy is just a couple of days short of 6 months. He has reflux and is under medication, Rinitidine and Gaviscon. I tried purees for 2 weeks, and he hated it! would not open his mouth, etc.
2 days ago started BLW, and to my surprise, he took a bit of aple and rice cracker and hapily munched on them! he did not choke at all, only a little bit of a gag but no milk came out with it. today he had a bit of carrot and a bit of brocoli, and he seems to love it. It is early days, but working great so far. Good Luck!
