DS is 7 months. He has takento his food really well after a slow start and is now on 3 meals a day, eating most things we give him.

We are doing a combination of spoon fed and baby led/finger foods, he happily does both.

For now he is veggie (this may change later) as I am veggie, DH isn't though.

He has lentils with veg, cheese pasta etc but I'm not sure what else to give him. I have a very varied diet myself but I am not sure how to give him egg, tofu etc.

Any ideas please?

just give him whatever you're eating.
i am veggie too, ds1 is veggie, ds2 is basically vegan as he can't tolerate egg/milk and ds3 will at least be veggie although i think he reacts to milk too, but wait and see

anyway, i've always just given the others whatever i've been eating and they're very healthy boys!
they love tofu actually, I use smoked tofu in fajitas, or they'll eat the marinated stuff just stirfried, scrambled egg, omelettes etc

My ds's are vegetarian (well pescatarian as they eat fish and seafood) and I weaned them on everything I ate. I used to lightly fry tofu squares and offer with other finger foods. HArd boiled egg sliced up, veg batons with homous dip (they used to just suck the homous off and dip in for more and loved it!) Scrambled eggs of course and omlettes cut into finger food size pieces so as they could help themselves.

just as you would eat pretty much...

i did not intend to have any vegetarian dc and the first 5 eat meat - but at 17 months my little boy is still vegetarian - i just cant bear to give him it

yes, like the others above - scrambled egg always goes down well. Have you tried nut butters? you can get cashew/almond butters that are yummy. Humous sometimes goes down well on a bit of toast. Slices of avocado - slices of fruit.

I used to be completely stumped when DS first started solids, so i wrote down a list of things he seemed to like as a little reminder when my brain wasnt working.

oh - grated carrot mixed with grated cheese stuffeed in a pitta and toasted.

he wasnt keen on egg yolk, but i wanted him to eat it for the iron - the only thing im the slightest bit concerned about re being veggie - so i mashed it up with tomato puree and spread it on toast.

i have a different problem in that DS now (2.9) is totally uninterested in food (can't imagine it myself - and only wants to eat fruit and yoghurt - driving me mad!)

My DS is pretty much veggie for the same reasons as you. He loves falafels, omelettes, fritatta (courgette & potato ones), pasta, red lentils, risotto, he loves home made lasagne too, scrambled eggs, eggy bread, egg mayo sandwiches. I also make quiche as he loves this and it isn't as full of salt etc as shop bought ones and it containes egg and veggies then. (I tend to buy the bases often though.)

NotanOtter · 05/12/2009 21:40

bluebump 'buy the bases' what is that?

bluebump · 06/12/2009 16:53

Sorry I didn't come back to this thread last night - I buy ready made quiche bases often rather than try and make pastry - far quicker. I then just mix up 2 eggs with courgette or leeks or something with cheese and stick it in the oven.

they sound great - so easy to home cook without the hassley bit!

DiazePam · 06/12/2009 22:16

When he has finger foods he tastes them, but doesn't yet really eat much of them. How do you manage giving stuff like tofu/stir fry in that case? Blitz it? Or just wait till he is a bit older and has got the hang more?

I tried him with a bit of french toast today - he liked that! Not much actually got into him though I think.

I know with BLW you aren't meant to worry about how much he is actually taking, but he is so scrawny (only on 2nd centile, has been between 2nd and 9th since birth) and had actually lost weight last time, so I am quite keen to get as much into him as possible.

if he has always been around the same centiles there is no reason to worry.

and the best way to get more calories into him is to give him more milk. food isn't as calorific and will fill him up and make him take less milk!
