Does a 9 month old still need to bf in the day?

Hi, would quite like to stop bf in the day is that possible? He's on 3 meals a day although the quantity of solid varies. Can I just offer a beaker of water through out day?

He's never fussed that much in the day anyway but I do always offer it to him. usually 6am, 11am, 2pm, 4pm, 7pm.

We're also trying to do some controlled crying as he wakes generally around 1am and 4am but I've not feeding him when he wakes anymore.

What's your 9 month old's doing?

Would like to stop bf before it becomes difficult all together.

Missing a good underwire bra [shallow] emotion

Many thanks

I think a 9 mth old still needs some breastmilk during the day.
(I still bf my dd in the day and she's 18mths.)

I think you will have to replace bf with formula if you want to give up until nearer 12 months and they can have cows milk. Young children need a high fat intake don't they and I'd be worried they weren't getting enough nutrients.

Everything I have been told or read says that you should continue to offer breastmilk or formula until 12 months - you shouldn't be giving cow's milk as a drink before then.

I also have a nearly 9mo. Like your ds he is not that interested during the day, but I offer regularly. He is more interested at bedtime and in the night.

I have been offering at morning wake (7am), 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and bedtime (6.45pm). As DS is taking very little and doing pretty well on solids, my plan is to stop offering the 9am (post breakfast) and 1pm (post lunch) feeds, but stick with the pre and post tea feeds in the hope that he will get less hungry at night. He does better at these ones most days as well.

If your ds is waking in the night and wanting feeding, it is very likely that he is actually hungry because he's used to getting a fair proportion of his calories at that time of day, so I personally would not use controlled crying for that - Ferber (the guy who invented controlled crying) certainly doesn't recommend it. We're using CC at the moment to try to get rid of non-feeding related wakes, while still feeding at night. DS was waking up every 1-2 hours at night, as well as for feeds. CC seems to be helping with that (although he's now waking very early, sigh). Is CC actually working for you though?

onesouffle - a nine month old, even one taking a variety of solids, still needs milk. You can't replace 5 breastfeeds with water without his nutrition , and hydration levels, coming off badly, sorry.

If you need to stop bf then doing it gradually and replacing the milk with formula/cows milk (after 12 mths) is safer.

I still BF my 11mo during the day, although he's dropped to just once a day now, led by him not me (plus am, pm and middle of the night). Easier than bottles IMO.
Am planning on attempting to ditch the night feed over the xmas holidays!

Also, I swapped to ordinary underwired bras a couple of months ago and haven't had any problems. They are so much nicer than nursing bras!
