started weaning properly...

Those of you who have read previous threads may be familiar with my DS' problems.

He has always had really bad reflux and there was a period of 5 weeks (between 3-4 month) when he did not gain any weight. I started weaning really slowly at 4 months and 2 weeks ago started giving him some really basic purees (just plain vegetables) and of course baby rice which he loved.

Anyway took him to get weighed yesterday and his weight has fallen below 0.4th centile again (after a huge battle to get him up to the 2nd) . I told the HV what I was doing with him and she was all for it but said that maybe I should step up the weaning and give him more high calorie foods and not puree everything so much. She also said if no history of allergies in family there was no need to avoid eggs or cheese.

Fast forward to yesterday lunch / today - yesterday he absolutely wolfed it up. Today he had 3 mouthfuls and then burst into tears. Egg everywhere.

My question is - how am I going to get him to take different foods? He really needs high energy stuff but if this is only the start then I am really worried his weight might drop off even more. Please help someone. I am really starting to worry about his weight.

is he still taking lots of milk?

i thought that eggs were to be avoided until 8 months or so, but i might be mistaken

also need to be carefl with cheese as it can be quite salty

can you give things with cream/ olive oil/butter etc in them>

you could mash up potato with butter and cream, or veg with butter/ olive oil

not pureeing so much won't make any difference to how calorfific the food is

the most filling and nutritous and calorific thing you can give a young baby is milk.. a few spoons of food, even if calorie dense is not going to pile the weight on

how old is he now?

AliGrylls · 03/12/2009 13:10

He is 6 months next week. Maybe I will give egg a rest for a while.

Over the past couple of weeks he has been doing his favourite trick of spending ages at the boob and then not taking his high calorie milk.

I feel like food is the way forward for him because he does seem to like the process of eating.

It is just a nightmare. Do you think I should continue with the purees for a while?

surley if he is happy at the breast then you should let him have as much breast milk as he wants? can you use the high cal milk to make food with? like in porridge or cereal or to make a white sauce for veg etc? or offer it with his food?

not sure what is best really, but if he enjoys the purees and breast milk, then stick to that?

Not been on for a couple of days. I mix high cal formula with his breakfast and tea but I can't face adding it to his lunch time meal. I just don't want to rear a child who will end up hating milk / food because it has bad memories for him.
