Have i made a huge mistake? DS thrown up the avocado..

i gave DS avocado at lunch time. Second time he's had anything other than breast milk. First time was the tiniest amount of avocado.

This time he had a good teaspoon, and over hte last 4 hours I'd say he's sicked up pretty much all of it.

Does this mean it's too early/he's allergic/ it was too much? He's just a greedy guts and having loads of extra milk today was a bad idea.....

all feedback gratefully received (ps he's 5.5 months - I gave in to pressure )

Avocado is incredibly rich for such a tiny baby - maybe if you really want to give him 'food' then some well cooked carrot or something like that might be better?

AllThreeWays · 30/11/2009 06:04

I would start with rice cereal's and pear if i were you. Better safe than sorry, although I am sure he will be fine.

Jackaroo · 30/11/2009 06:12

Hmm, didn't do DS1 any harm, so don't worry about htat!

I have issue with rice cereal as I don't really see the point of it. It tastes of nothing, and contains little in teh way of nutrition...

but maybe a bit of boiled carrot next time!

PS The 'tiny' baby is 9kg (20lbs!), sitting up, and already trying to eat everything on my plate

I think baby rice is recommended because it is non-allergenic and 'neutral' to get your baby used to eating, it is not meant to replace the nutrition in breastmilk. Pear is also a very low-allergy food and very soft so good to start with

AllThreeWays · 30/11/2009 06:23

Maybe you should reword your OP to 'all feedback rebutted with exclamation marks'.

Was just trying to help, I think the point of rice cereal is that it is tasteless, allergy free, and doesn't make them full, so they still want milk. In other words something innocuous to start with, to get them used to the idea of solids.

Jackaroo · 30/11/2009 06:29

I was trying to reassure that I wouldn't have started with avocado if I hadn't a precedence, and then agree that carrrot might be a better way to go.

Don't worry I'll ask for the whole post to be removed if it's that bizarre to do anything other than agree blindly with all the advice given. Cheers, v. helpful.

As to the exclamation marks; I know, frowned upon, but was trying to keep it light (you, know, to show that I wasn't dismissing the information out of hand).

Kazookazoo, thank you for the explanation of the rationale behind baby rice, makes a lot of sense.

ah, cross-posted with allthreeways, great minds ...

jackaroo i was also a bit sceptical about baby rice (so bland!) and know a few mums who've gone with fruit to start off with -- i'm doing rice because there is a history of allergies and asthma in my DH's family, and introducing anything else before 6 mo has been shown to increase the chances of developing an allergy... all depends on your circumstances.

also heard that starting off with fruit can get them refusing foods that aren't so sweet so maybe carrot is the right alternative!

Avocado is quite high on the list of foods people can be allergic to as it a cross allergy with latex.

The first time my DD had it she was very very sick and she is allergic to quite a few things.

I'm not suggesting in anyway that your DS is allergic to avocado but I'm of the impresssion that some of the high allergy foods are also quite hard to digest. Could just be that with your DS.

Weirdly avocado always seems to be recommended as an early food for babies.

However, avocad is a fab ans super convenient food for them when they are older. It's very high in calories and lots of older babies love it. And you can just buy one and give the baby somw without having to worry about sterilizing or finding a bowl or anything. A bit like bananas - only mine didn't like bananas!

mspotatochip · 01/12/2009 20:15

mmm my 5.5 month old refused avocado today too and I also thought it was a good babyfood. Live and learn. Ds loves carrot, and sweetcorn with baby rice, peas and pears with baby rice etc but totally spat out the avocado puree

babyrice tastes like cement I always add fruit or veg
